Help!

my focus has been in garage for 5 months with starting issues! It's done 99k miles and i've had it for the last 70k with no probs. It starts on 3 cylinders with noise and plenty of smoke - then it stalls - eventually after a few cycles it stays started! once warm it starts ok - it drives as normal with good mpg - it's had injectors checked/cleaned then re programed, heater plugs checked, new starter, new sensors, tappets set, fuel tank cleaned (seems to start slightly better with more fuel in tank), dmf seems quiet.

I want my car back so any help greatly appreciated !

ps it's a 2004 115ps tdci fully serviced

Hi Phil

If its starting on three cylinders its either got to be a faulty injector or low compression, has it had a compression test?. Unless it has some strange electronic problem that is only affecting one cylinder - but I doubt it. As its OK when hot sounds more like compression although you can't be certain of anything with modern cars.

hi peter, had a compression test and it's fine! injectors have been out and sent to rep diesel specialist - tested and working fine put back in and re set. When i say starting on 3 cylinders i cant be certain but that what it sounds like!

Maybe an air leak in the fuel pipework, which is perhaps what MikeTorque is getting at?

If air is drawn into the fuel system it can cause hesitant running and excessive cranking to start the engine.

I'll ask garage about poss air leaks - thanks ps. sometimes it will start ok - then next day

will start like a pig!
