Renault Laguna estate (Year 2000) - Poor radio reception - aerial probs? - dodo

Just bought a really clean 2000 Laguna estate for donkeywork renovating a house. very useful car and boot space a1. one gripe is the very poor quality of the radio reception. The reception is abysmal and listening to any radio station is a joke. I can't see an external aerial so I assume its wired into the rear screen. Any ideas of a possible ficx or location of associated amplifier? Cheers

I think the poor radio reception problem will be the least of your worries if you keep the car! If the rest of it works ok, get rid now before the big bills start.

Have you not read up on the laguna 2 history?

Its not a Laguna 2 but the last of the old shape Laguna 1 Phase 2! It has had one owner from new 68000 miles and a good pulling 1.8 16v petrol engine giving 120 bhp. It didn't cost a lot and came with a full service history. It has a huge boot and a good shaped rear. If it dies I will lose not that much over scrap value and will save my 2011 Passat.

Was just wondering about poor radio reception but if all fails will fit a roof aerial myself next weekend.

Are you sure it is an aerial fault?Pull out the radio and check the connections. You could also try inserting a length of wire into the aerial socket to see if reception improves. If the antenna system is faulty, then a stick on windscreen aerial will probably do the job ok.hth

Yes I extracted the radio/cd player and checked that the aerial was correctly connected which it was. Will extract it again and will attach an old aerial and adapter I have in the garage to see if things improve. i didn't know you could still get windsreen aerials - i last used one on a Vauxhall Victor 2000 SL!

Have now exhausted my CD collection on the Guna and have completed 6200 economical miles with not a problem. Would still like to hear the radio and work out how to improve the radio reception.

Fit a roof aerial thats the easiest the standard arial I believe is mounted in a door piller, have you removed the radio to see if the lead has dropped out.

Yes I checked the connection. Really like the old bus and its ability to soak upp the bumps on our dreadful roads. Will investigate a pillar mounted aerial now. Thanks

The aerial is built in to the rear screen. You could check that the connecting joints to the screen circuit are clean and for any obvious break in circuit. I am sure I read recently (on HJ?) that there is a "liquid type" fix for broken screen circuits. Apart from that, the Laguna Mk1 Est can carry a considerable load and will go on for many miles if the engine is looked after.

Interesting - so it is not insignificant that the rear heated screen is not working?

After some more pondering over this, my memory is becoming a bit clearer and I now think that the aerial is built in to the rear Off Side quarter glass. I also think there is an amplifier in the system that is connected via an aerial lead from the radio and could be located behind the rear OS quarter panel trim. What I wrote about checking that the connections are clean (and the earth good) similarly applies. I remember that the radio (reception?) was not very good at the best of times. I am sure you can see if the heated rear screen circuit is broken if you inspect it carefully. Over and out.
