Re. the HJ column in the telegraph today.

My trusty serviceman showed me the pollen filter that he had replaced in a recent service. I was surprised at the quantity of dirt in there. I told him at the time that I suffer from tree pollens in the early spring, and the only time that I get relief is when I'm driving the car.

I changed mine recently and was also surprised at the condition-it looked at though something had eaten into it!

I think they should be checked every 6 months, especially in dusty areas.

Not surprising, if you wiped the car with a damp white cloth after parking over one damp night the filth on the cloth would be an eye opener, goodness knows just how much filth we breath in, i doubt most of it is pollen.

Perhaps it has. I serviced my Audi's air filters a few weeks ago and one of them looked as though a mouse had tried to make a nest from it.

Only in Arabia. Prompted by the need for an air-con re-gas (first time ever - well done Ford) I have just serviced our 17yr old 131,000m Focus pollen filter for the first time. Only one third of it was seriously bunged up with dry black dust and debris, the rest of the pleats were just black and dusty. I held the pleats apart to clean with a stiff tooth brush, then squirted water through each pleat from the inside surface. Should be OK for another 13yrs ;-). Anyway, microfilters are unnecessary - do we have pollen filters over our window frames? All that is needed is a basic filter so leaves and insects don't interfere with the fan workings etc.

I don't suffer much with pollen effects myself, but the amount of " Crap " on top of my pollen filter the last few times I've changed it has surprised me.

If you drove a human being nose-up at 70 mph for a few miles, I expect he'd have a few bogies to pick.

Waste of time, take it out and throw it away, you won't notice.

Purely a marketing scam.

In my experience, when the pollen filter is removed, much more dust enters the car which means that the inside surface of the windows get dirty much quicker....and I hate cleaning windows. In addition my wife, who suffers from hay fever, has far worse symptoms, so in my opinion a pollen filter is not a marketing scam and I for one value its fitment.

It's often called a cabin filter - and when you see the carp on them at 10,000 miles you can see why they're useful.

Not to mention that this filth and organic matter ends up on the fins of the A/C evaporator where it becomes a damp substrate for mould, bacteria and fungus leading to odours and spores.

You're obviously not an allergy sufferer, so your opinion is both pointless and wrong.

Although I don't suffer from allergies, I still benefit from the cleaner air from a cabin filter.

Can anyone explain why they only fit cabin filters with air-con?

Can anyone explain why they only fit cabin filters with air-con?

Because in hot weather, people without aircon open windows.
