I have had this car for three years and like it. However, I have had some problems recently - a new ABS sensor (£450) and seemingly random EMS lights. It has done 37k miles. I am wodering about a change to a similar size of car. If I went for the 1.8 petrol I would avoid the DPF issues I read about, but at the cost of mpg. I like the look of the Hyundai i30, and of the ix35. But the petrol engines look uninspiriing and I keep hearing about problems with diesels. So I am confused. Any advice please?

Try an A3 with the 1.4 TFSI petrol engine: the road tests rate this engine and it doesn't appear to be uninspiring. If buying new, you'll avoid the early ones which had both turbo and supercharger and proved unreliable.

Thanks. I was told by my garage man to steer clear of that engine. Do you think that the problems have now been solved? He reckoned that all that technology was just too much to keep going - 'even VW don't understand it'. Happy to get a correction!
