I think I may be needing a little bit of help, guys. You see, I drive a "60 reg" Ford Fiesta, that's on a PCP (I drive it for 3 years and give it back) The problem with the car is, my Wife says that we need a new car, due to the fact that it's only a 3 door, and we're looking to have a family soon, so we need a five door. I have looked around for another new car on a PCP agreement, and most places that I've spoken to want up to two two grand to swap us into another car, and the repayments go up by £40 a month!

So I've had a look on Auto Trader, and spotted this:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...n/radius/100/page/2/postcode/cb12lt?logcode=p

Now, I need (no, I MUST have) a car that is totally 100% reliable, as I'm the kitchen manager for Meals On Wheels, and I work 7 days a work (hence the new car - as I do upwards of 15000 miles per year) So, why am I looking at a ten year old car, that will no doubt fall apart on me ASAP, as I will run it into the ground?

I think I may be falling in love with the K11, that's why! My Wife thinks I've gone nuts, but working on my Mum's old Micra, has rekindled a lost feeling in me, one that I had when my Mum was still around (R.I.P.) I just love tinkering with cars! (Shame I'm crap at the mechanical side of things, though......)

Would it really make sense to swap out a brand new car, for a K11? As I have stated, I don't know sweet FA about cars, and if I don't go to work, I don't get paid, so I need a decent car. Have I lost it? It would make sense to get out of paying through the nose for a car I don't own, though..........Cheers : )

Link doesn't work for me.

Have you lost it?, no you may be coming to a crossroads though where you can't see the value in throwing constant money at a fast depreciating new vehicle, costing the earth even if it sits on your drive, lots of us feel the same, are we bonkers?, probably, living with the results of idiot politicians all your life has that effect.

It sounds like you might be considering bangernomics, which can be the very cheapest form of motoring, but usually if have a reasonable mechanical knowledge (or a tame handy chap) and can keep your cheap old motor running reasonably on a shoestring.

It might not be the cheapest car owning for those who can't fix ther own, the cars you buy won't have kudos or image or be the safest either, but there is considerable satisfaction at getting off the consumer treadmill.

Instead of PCP's have you considered buying nearly new Korean and taking advantage of the excellent warranties instead, with your mileage you should be quids in.

Gotta say - the new Fiesta is quite a large car - it's almost Focus sized nowadays. I know it's a pain flipping a seat and bending for a baby seat but it's certainly not unmanageable. My mum used to put my sister and I in a baby seat and a booster seat into a 3 door Datsun Cherry!

Link doesn't work either!

No, you haven't 'lost it', but the key to running an old car is getting a good one in the first place. This is the tricky bit, and there are no guarantees.

Not even a new car can be guaranteed 100% reliable. The best warranty is being able to afford alternative transport if your car breaks. Could you hire a car for a week? Could you toss away the old one without sentimentality and get another one? If the answe to both is "yes" then you have a compelling argument for bowing out of the depreciation game.

None f us can make the link work, but it looks as if you're looking at an old Nissan Micra - 5-door, presumably, but with less room in it than a current-model Fiesta. Other factors against it are that this isn;t a fun car: you need it for work and famiy-to-be - and you say you're no mechanic.

Surely - even if you can't afford to buy outright and you need another PCP - you can find a 5-door Fiesta (or Micra if you must) of similar age to the one you have, wthout such a hike in monthly payments?

Doesn't the front cross-member rot out on those? Make sure you give it a good once-over.

There are no 'needs' or 'musts'. Why can't you or your wife just bend your backs? My two sons never knew anything but travelling in the back of two-door cars and coupes. They are now 6ft 6in and 6ft 3in! They once tried to talk me into buying a 2+2 E-type!
If you want to stop throwing money down the drain buy a 10-year-old Honda Civic.

If you need reliable 7 days a week transport how often is putting a child in the back of a 3 door car a major factor/problem? I'm with the others - stick with whjat you've got and live with the minor difficulty involved.

Think about the timing - you're a year into a 3-year deal, so got 2 to run - if you're still at the "thinking of starting a family" stage that's nearly another year before anything changes and most of that final year any baby will in a baby seat, not a child seat.

I'd tough it out 'till the end of your PCP and buy a family-oriented car then.

Sorry for the non-working link, guys. The MIcra I was looking at, was a five door on an "02" plate, and had only done 37.000 miles (Only 16k more than my Fiesta!) It even has Air-Con and remote locking etc. All this for two grand. I just thought it would maybe a better idea to buy this, rather than throwing away six grand (over three years) on the Fiesta.

And I know the Fiesta is a bigger car, but geting in and out of the back of it, is a nightmare (Worse than the previous shape model, which I have also owned) I've lost count of how many of my friends have nearly knocked themselves out on the door frame!

And I did think about buying a Korean car, but after owning a Hyundai for two years, and the clutch going on it three times (a known fault on Kia/Hyundai cars according to this site) and the car having a supension problem where it would "crab" across the road, and wreck tyres after 7500 miles, I thought I'd steer clear!

Many, many thanks for the help, though. You lot are ace : )

I doubt if the aircon still works on an 02 plate Micra.

Another thing to watch out for is that if you were to hand the Fiesta back, there may be negative equity or a penalty payment for ending the contract early. You'd need to check the terms and conditions carefully.

As a former owner of a 3-door Micra K11 (my first car!), I HAD to get rid of it at 10 years old as it was starting to cost me more to run per year than it was worth. The dealership (full Nissan service history) said that the front cross-member was indeed starting to deteriorate, though not bad enough to be hazardous.

It had failed its MOT twice in one year on a shot rear brake cylinder (waer-and-tear - fair enough) and more crucially a rusted thorugh section of bodywork by the front seatbelt mounting point (which had to be replaced/welded). Good for its day, but past its sell-by date now.

I would suggest looking at the last of the previous-generation Mazda 2s, based on the previous Fiesta/Fusion and (according to a German car mag) very reliable. See HJ's review for more - the flat load lip (like the Fusion) may be useful. Probably quite cheap now that the current Mazda 2 has been around for 5 years now.

One of the run-out Ford Fusions may be worth a look (despite the odd looks on some models) - make sure you get the stability control package as my sister tells me they handle badly if they don't have it (she's had two Fusions). Weirdly enough, they don't seem so good for build quality, given they were built in the same factory as the Mazdas - maybe a component issue?

We've got one of the last (57 reg) Mazda 2's - owned from new. Aside from the coil pack failing at 8 months, no other problems have materialised. One of the advantages for us is that the boot sill is extremely low, and together with the nice wide tailgate, makes it ideal for my partner who runs her own massage therapy business - has to load a table into the car for home visits. We're looking at replacing it this year, but have seen nothing to touch this aspect of the car.

I have been into my dealership today, as my Fiesta has been having a few problems with it's front supension. Whilst the car was being seen to, I strolled into the Hyundai dealership next door. I have managed to strike a deal for a Hyundai i20 "Classic" 5 door, for only an £800 deposit and an extra £20 P/M. Is it worth it?

We have owned two Hyundais before. One was my Wife's Amica that we used when we first moved in together, and it was great, The other was a Getz which was tripe (Three clutches and a steering problem made me "get rid" after two years) Just how does the i20 fair? (Please remember I do a lot of town driving - do these suffer from weak clutches as well?)

Many thanks in advance : )

Have I gone mad? - Bobbin Threadbare

The i20 looks ok - suggest you have a look at the HJ review on this site. It'll cope with town driving just fine.

What I don't get is how you're going to get rid of your Fiesta, and why you've asked whether it's worth bothering with the Hyundai...? The Hyundai will have a 5 year warranty and such, but I think the Fiesta is the better quality and drive of the two.

I'll admit, the PCP etc is a bit alien to me so I can't say whether it's 'worth' it - I buy my cars outright. I like a bargain.

Have I gone mad? - iainbo

I drive a 15 year old 1 litre micra and it is the most reliable car i've ever owned

  • Stiil on original battery and exhaust.
  • £80-£100 each year for service and MOT.
  • 50 MPG on my 90 mile daily commute - yes, there are those who say such journeys can't be done in wee, low powered cars, but, believe it or not it does make there and back every single day!
  • Ignition module went about 4 years ago, but apart from that, no repairs.

But - I wouldn't swap yours for it - mines has been in family from new, so history is known (mother in law, first owner - librarian). It's did low miles - 80k (big commute has only started for past 6 months, and will end soon), and probably not the safest car in world - whenever baby is in car it's always in wife's C-Max, and it's starting to show signs of rust now.

Never buy a Ford, I've had two.

Have I gone mad? - ValiantSaint

Well, I've just had a long chat with the salesman, about the clutch problems that (I know) Hyundais suffer from. He siad to me that the dealership has NEVER seen one clutch failure in his three years of working there (And has offered for the service manager to e-mail the same statement) Should I believe him? (As the car itself does seem like a good deal.....)

Oh, and I found this whilst I was just typing:

We have a 55 Getz and nothing has gone wrong with it since new so are looking at an i20.

It eats tyres but thats about it . I wouldnt worry about the odd clutch story,a few cars in hundreds of thousands? You would have to be unlucky, plus its the first I have heard of it and I have been researching for the last month.

There are some amazing deals on them at the moment, plus try and get a Polo / Yaris with the same equipment levels...expect to pay £3-4k more.

Have I gone mad? - ValiantSaint

I had an 06 Getz that went through 3 clutches in two years. Maybe I was unlucky with that one? Do you do a lot of town driving?

Have I gone mad? - doog

Its all town plus its been used to get my son and daughter through their driving tests so its been hammered. It has about 61K on the clock, had it from new. Luck of the draw?

We always had 3 door cars with children - they can't fall out of the back when they get bigger. I'm going back to the days when we had two children and a mini 1000 (with a baby and a 4 yr old) and then moved up to a fiesta 1100!

We now put baby ish grandchildren in 3 door cars without too much of a problem so my advice is stick with what you have got. You know the car and the costs.
