If back seat space is an issue, then go for the Prius, which has a huge amount of room in the back for a medium-sized car.
The Leaf is only any good if all your mileage is short journeys near where you live. And even this is no good if (as most city-dwellers do) you have to park on the street, where charging is impractical.
The Auto Express test had the smallest Lexus rather than the Prius (presumably because its purchase cost is similar to the others in the test). I can't see how the Lexus, whose mechanicals are the same as the Prius, justifies the extra cost.
As others have suggested, it's horses for courses. For mainly long journeys, a good diesel will still be best; for in-town work the Prius has the edge; and for a mixture of motoring the Ampera would be a good compromise if it didn't cost so much. For me personally, doing 10,000-15,000 miles a year of mixed motoring, one of the modern economical petrol engines fits the bill.
