Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203 (2006) - Engine Services Light on and staying on - Si_M

Driving home tonight, the engine services light came on.

I drove about half a mile home then checked the oil and coolant.

Coolant = OK

Oil = Low, I put about 2 litres in (no sign of leaks but not long had dealer service)

I had no indication that the oil was low from engine services which I should have got.

Topped up oil, light stays on.

The book contradicts itself a little it says

1. Light is no fuel- restart 3 or 4 times after filling

If not problem with fuel or exhaust system

Later in book it says

2. Problem with electrics,

Either coolant gauge or rev counter

I have checked over everything and all seems well other than the low oil which I resolved.

Can the lamp be manually reset? Or does anyone think the problem could be more serious.

Any advice is appreciated

When you say the engine services light came on ,do you mean the yellow malfunction indicator lamp?This refers to a fault with the engine management system and is not an oil level warning.Does your car have an engine oil dipstick?Some models do not.Putting in 2 litrs of oil may have overfilled the system.You will need to get a proper diagnostic check done to establish the fault logged.I am sure that the oil level can be checked on the dash info menu.hth

The car does have a dipstick and is now in the correct zone!

Must be a coincidence that the engine management lamp came on, will this need to go to a Mercedes dealer for diagnostics or will most garages be able to iew the data?

Are you sure that it does not require a service the service indicator comes on when one is required.

Update,Lamp has gone off! Service is up to date, C180, 100,500 miles.
