SEAT Ibiza ST - Any thoughts on this car? - Man without a plan

Hi folks,

Anyone got any thoughts on the Seat Ibiza Sport Touring?

Thinking of buying one with a little nipper due in July, seems to be a good option of small ecconomical car, with big boot to keep all the baby related kit in.

If anyone has owned one and has any comments, or if anyone has any thoughts on which engines will be good, bad or ugly in it then please shout up.

Likely to do 13-14,000 a year in it, big mix of roads through town, A-roads and motorway.... looking at a 1 year old version for about £9k

Current model Ibiza is basically a current model Polo, minus the badge, minus the 50% VW tax.

I was considering changing my motor, and went and drove a load of the 8 month old/10k miles ones the local car supermarket had. All ex-rentals.

1.2 S petrol, good little car as long as you don't venture out of town much. A bit lacklustre on the motorway.

1.4SE petrol - my pick of the bunch. Goes well (85hp) and gets decent fuel economy. I don't do many miles, some in town, some on A roads, some on motorway.

1.2TDI - cement mixer engine. Awful. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Good fuel economy.

1.6TDI - this is the one to go for for big miles on the motorway. Low geared round town, so I'd be wary of clogged DPF unless you drive everywhere in 2nd or 3rd.

Otherwise, they drive well, and are almost as well put together as the Polo. The radio is rubbish, though, but that's easy changed by your local car audio shop (or Halfords if you're brave).

According to What Car's lists, you can only have the Ibiza ST with the 1.2 petrol or 1.2 diesel, unlike the hatch.

You can get a Fabia estate with a wider choice of engines - that's what I'd go for.

What Car must be out of date, 1.6 TDI and 1.4 Petrol in ST version are definately available.

Don't like the Fabia unfortunately, doesn't qyite look right to me.... and its not the badge either....

I think the ST is a smart looking car and is in my mind as being on my shortlist when I downsize.

I hired one for a couple of days last year - was the 1.2 ultra economical diesel which is sort of an acquired taste, but strangely characterful. Quite a comfy interior and big boot. Didn't like the dials much nor could I fathom the radio.

It is indeed available with the 1.2 TSI petrol - tempting, 1.4 petrol - not so because it's not as powerful or efficient as the 1.2 TSi and has higher VED rate, the 1.2 diesel as mentioned, and the 1.6 TDi diesel.

There is about to be a facelifted version introduced, and they say that some of the changes will be to the instrument panel. There will also be more sporty versions and I think they might even put the 2.0 diesel in it.

Thanks for the info guys...

On a related note, what is anyone's thoughts on the Seat Leon 1.2 TSI...

A review I read (and the salesmans patter) tell me that this variant produces the same power output as the old 1.6 engine....

I'm just thinking in the Ibiza is one thing, but in the heavier Leon, might be underpowered???

The salesman is on the right lines re comparing to the old 1.6 petrol.

Should be OK - they use the same engine in some versions of the Octavia and the various reviews seem to like the mix.

There is a new Leon coming out either later this year or early next year.

The Ibiza IS pretty good-looking.

On the subject of looks and badges, there's also the Clio estate in this class. Also available with a well-regarded 1.2 turbo petrol engine, I believe.

Hiya,

I have a E-Ecomotive ST which I bought this time last year. I personally love it, but then I hate paying through the nose for fuel which is why I bought the eco model. I get on average about 70 mpg which is excellent but a little short of the claimed 80 made by Seat... but you will hear that argument on all engine consumprion figures provided by Seat.

My parents bought the 1.6 TDI version which does really go, a lot faster then my little 1.2 TDI but then it uses more fuel (they get about 55-60 mpg). Depending on what you want, best fuel economy or pace will make that decision for you.

I have covered just over 20,000 miles and the car is faultless, no problems and is very reliable. I recently drove to Austria with a ski box cruising at 80 mph all the way there and the drive was easy, done in a day and no aches or pains. So the comfort is great, very pratical and cheap to run... not much not too like.

The only critism I have is the space in the rear. I would have prefered a slightly smaller boot (which is massive) so the rear seats had a little more room. I have a 5 month old daughter and her car seat means the passenger seat has to be moved forward. Thats fine if the front passenger isn't too tall, but you would struggle to sit 3 other adults in comfort. When my daughter gets a bit bigger and I can fit forward facing car seats, then their will be plenty of room for all, but rear facing car seats are a sqeeze.

Steer clear of the big 17" alloys (and sport suspension if you can) which my parents have, they are not very forgiving on British roads .I would highly recommend this car, a great drive and cheap to run.

Hi,

I run two of these as perk cars for my employees. Both have had replacement turbos under warranty, one car at 12k, the other one today at 33k. Car one now has done 75k and had a replacement DPF at 22k. All ok since.
