Is this the future of SatNav? No annoying voice! - Carhoots.com

AT&T have developed a vibrating steering wheel that promises to deliver navigation information to drivers more safely than on-screen instructions or turn-by-turn Sat Nav commands. Clockwise vibration pattern means turn right, anti clockwise vibration turn right. Simples!

According to AT&T drivers accurately followed instructions and made fewer turn errors. The work also builds on other research showing that listening to voices is distracting and leads to loss of control of the vehicle.

Is this necessary technology or another gimmick?

Road atlas and A-Zs for me, thank you kindly. And I keep small binoculars in the door pocket so that if I think I've made a wrong turn, I can pull in to the first safe place and look back to the road signs to see which way I should have gone!

I like SatNavs. I just wish they would have a bluetooth connection to an earpiece or a plug in ear piece that the driver can hear the instructions and the passengers wont have to. Trying to hear the SatNav over the car radio and conversation is annoying for me and irritating to my passengers. Or is there any thing on the market anyone out therere knows of?

I'd rather have someone talking to me(it can be turned off) than someone twitching the wheel.

I write out a route first. Sometimes I use googlemaps on my phone but no voice as I end up yelling at it to shut up when it insists I must do a u-turn. Also it can't pronouce anything. Exit to 'Weeee-gann'!

On mine you can turn the voice off & programme "NO U-turns"-I use it mainly to tell me my speed and the limits.I usually ignore the recommended route-"re-calculating" is what I tend to hear if I turn the voice on!

Yes, I can turn off the voice too. You can do that on all SatNavs. But I want the instructions relayed to me as the driver. The passengers don't need to hear.

Sat Navs Hmmmm.

Picked a pony up for a friend. Sixty miles to the farm towing a horse trailer. No address or directions, she just gave me her sat nav and said follow that ! After sixty miles it said "in 200 yards turn left", Its a farm track, OK rutted and overgrown, but it must be the one so I turns left, about a quarter of a mile the sat nav says " at the next roundabout take the third exit "

Hmmmmmm !

The AT&T thing is just something to go wrong like all the other junk you have to have these days.
