I'm guessing that you mean the temperature gauge is on zero when the car cuts out?
The thermostat is under the bonnet and helps the engine reach running temp quickly.
If your car is a 1.6 petrol engine they have a known problem with a camshaft dephaser pulley which can cause the same symptoms. If I were you I'd let a garage look at it rather than resorting to guess work, as replacing parts on a whim can be expensive.
