BMW? in the market for another European car co. - Trilogy

The ongoing saga around Saab’s bankruptcy seems to never end, and this time around there may be six to seven serious bidders for the Swedish automaker, one of which is believed to be BMW.

At their weekly press conference, the company touched on its pressing salary situation for its current employees and mentioned that it would take at least another week to sort things out; but the more interesting news is that the highest bidder may not get the deal, according to Saab. The Swedish automaker is looking for a company that will present the best option for the creditors, employees, and the region the most. Which essentially means that Saab will go to the company that has the money, knowledge, experience, and credibility to continue producing Saab vehicles.

It was confirmed that one of the six or seven bidders was a European automaker based out of Munich, which leads many to believe that it is BMW since the two firms once signed an engine purchasing agreement back in 2010. It would be mighty interesting if BMW is able to come out of this one to not only continue producing Saab vehicles, but using their platforms for their own models and even MINI ones.

Hopefully they'd make a better job of SAAB than they did with Rover.

It would be interesting to speculate what on earth BMW would do with Saab. The current models are never going to make money, GM having diluted whatever USPs Saab once had; and any new models would surely be in competition with BMW's own extensive range.

Maybe they intend on making a budget BMW - as Skoda is to VAG?

Just speculation at the moment. As most of is well know with this saga, it has had more twists than a whodunnit!

Would it not be more likely that BMW want a bigger FWD chassis.

To preserve the purity of the RWD exclusively BMW brand.

They done good with the smaller MINI brand in this respect, which I gather was there thinking at the time of the purchase.

With the Mini being reknowned for FWD handling?

just a thought

Saab got any decent factories or land?

They don't have a must have like Mini with it's potential to make £billions, so what bit is tempting them.

Seems strange to me, nothing to asset-strip or technology to steal from this company - why?

Back in 2008, when Saab was first put up for sale by GM, BMW were named as one of the 27 interested parties who had expressed interest in purchasing Saab. If they were to buy Saab, it will be interesting to see whether they continue with the Saab name, or, as GM found with Daewoo, has there been too much damage done to the Saab name for it to continue as a brand? Do BMW want Saab for the production capacity?
