Citroen Xsara 2.0 HDi (90bhp) 1998 - Intermittent charging - martinm

Car has about 60k and runs fine, but when accelerating past 2800 revs and dropping below 2400 revs, the charging light/beeper briefly activates. I put a voltmeter on and the voltage does indeed drop during these times, so it's not a faulty alarm!

Any ideas where to look - not obvious as it's intermittent.

The obvious thing would be a faulty alternator but before you change it carefully check all the connections both at the alternator and at the battery end, the fact that loss of charge coincides with a certain rev range it could that there is a resonance at that frquency causing movement of the electrical connections, if you cant find anything the fault must lie with the alternator.

May be an idea to check the drive pulley/belt system.I would think this engine is fitted with a rubberised crank pulley and possibly an over-run clutch alternator pulley, both of which can slip and lose drive.hth
