Rover 214 intermittant fault - greaser pv
I have a customer with a 214 16v "R" - plate. Occasionally it dies whilst driving, sometimes ,it recovers, once or twice it has stalled and not re-started, however having been left for 5-10 mins it starts o.k. Today it wouldn't start from cold ( unusual, as it is more problematic while half warm) and the battery went down. I got it going with jump leads and a shot of easy start, but I haven't cured the fault. Any ideas ? Gratefully received .

Commonest problem on the K series engine is the Crank Angle Sensor, but this would not tie in with it starting on Easy Start, which suggests a fuel supply problem. None the less, for the relatively low cost of a CAS (about £25 from Rover) I would go for this first. After that you need to look at fuel pump operation / voltage supply - possible relay fault, but I think relay will be switched by ECM. Also check vacuum line from manifold to ECM for contamination / blockage.

I had a similar problem with a Rover Metro.
After weeks of head-sratching and changing various components,it turned out to be a faulty printed-circuit on the fuse box. (New box required) It was very difficult to find because the fault was so intermittent.

I would say crank sensor, but the easy start puts me off it a bit. It might well be a red herring.

NSC100760 is the crank sensor in question; but failure is very rare, unlike the earlier ADU7430 sensor with a flylead as fitted to earlier 214's.

Distributor cap & rotor arm, perhaps?
