There are only three parts that go down. The windings will last for years unless you put a screwdriver in them, or try to clean them.

1. Bridge rectifier / aka diodes. Likeliest suspect.

2. Voltage regulator. Unlikely.

3. Bearings. Possible.

The car in question was a 2000 Vauxhall Astra 1.7 tdi with the Isuzu, and the accompanying questionable Hitachi electrics(Japanese firm but made in UK?).

Having been subjected to rebuilt starter motor quality I decided to rebuild my own. Getting the nut off the pulley was hard, but wrapping an old bike inner tube round it got the necessary purchase.

I reckon it'll last another 30.000, as the slip rings are wearing slightly and there is play starting at the outer bearing.

Then I'll replace that item.

It was an experiment, for £22.50, it mey well outlast the car, and it taught me a lot.

I replaced the rectifier, which comes as a complete unit.

Cheap, but beware of the brushes wearing out, these only seem to come as a unit with the regulator, about the same price.

Yes you can save a few quid if you can get it to bits ok, starters either solonoid packs in which can just be dirt build up on plunger or teeth shot on pinion.

But the average motorist would rather just have a new/recon unit fitted with a warranty.

I've been down this road a couple of times with great success. There used to be an auto electric place in Aldershot that would sell you any of the bits needed for a repair. The onlyu alternators I ever fixed were the old Lucas 16 or 18ACR units which had separate regulator and rectifier packs. The brushes were also dead easy to change.

I dont think I'd bother if the bearings were shot but everything else is faie game.
