Jaguar XF 2.7D - Overheating Jaguar XF 2.7D - hatman

I've recently acquired a 2009 XF 2.7D Luxury with 44,000 miles. When driving home this evening, I noticed that the heater seemed far hotter than normal and I also noticed a burning smell from under the bonnet. The engine water looks fine but it seems as though the burning sensation is coming from the rubber pipe leading into the engine water. I also noticed a ticking noise afterwards as though the engine is cooling down.

As a new XF owner, I don't know of any good independent specialists so I'd greatly appreciate any views on what could be causing the trouble. I've driven about 2000 miles in the car and up until tonight haven't noticed this issue before. I have read that the turbos operate at a very high temperature but doubt that this is connected to my issue.

No warning lights came at all.

Thanks in advance

Is it actually overheating?temp gauge near red and /or coolant loss?I suspect the hotter coolant may be related the the regeneration process of the diesel particle filter where the engine management system will get the engine temp as hot as possible to burn off the dpf soot.Just a thought.hth

It could have just been the DPF cleaning itself but if you are worried probably best to have it checked out at a dealer.

Many thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, there is no temperature gauge but if the car was overheating a red warning light should have come on. As far as I can see in the dark, there is no coolant loss, the coolant level is right up to the maximum.

I read a fair bit about the DPF before buying an XF and it nearly put me off buying one! To be honest, I didn't realise that this overheating could be part of the engine management system burning off soot. Many thanks again as you've put my mind at rest.

There is definitely a slight burning smell from the radiator grille, even about 3 hours after I've stopped using the car. I'll see how it goes tomorrow and it does it again, I will get it checked out. I was just a bit worried about the heater getting very hot but fingers crossed it was nothing untoward
