Breakdown cover - i'm not mechanically minded so if something goes wrong, its a phone call made to someone to help me out which brings me to breakdown cover.

I've done lots of research but am unsure of which one to go with.

My car is a volvo s70 1998 2.5 and basically I want cover that will get me back home if i break down and understand this is sold as recovery however what concerns me is having random 3rd party garages tinkering with my car.

Best reviews seem to be for AutoAid but they are pay and you claim (i may not have funds with me at the time).

Also, what is classed as "reasonable time" as these companies say, if your car can't be fixed in "reasonable time" by us or a local garage then you will be towed to your choice of destination?

For example, say my car break downs, the patrol man can't fix it but he says "dodgy garage" can fix it and you have to pay them labour and parts, if you don't we can't tow you.

Any advice on who to go with?

My insurance is with elephant and they offered me full cover for £41 and they use a company called "call assist" are they legit or cowboys?

I've just taken out (my first policy) for breakdown cover-because I'm going to be doing a few long distance trips.

Both the AA and RAC were £70 for national recovery. I would want the car towed home in the event of a long distance breakdown-and sort it out from there. The price seems reasonable to me. The £20 policies are little more than tow-you-to-the-nearest-garage. You could walk to the nearest pub and sit down with a yellow pages yourself!

I signed up with the RAC (but cancelled) as in their terms it says "if we can't have it fixed at roadside or by a local garage then you can have it towed to any uk address" which means you can't demand it towed if the patrol man thinks a garage can fix it and then your basically left in limbo as if the garage scew up then your left with hassle!

Think I'd better re-read my small print Tony!

Aye - have a look mate as I called their call centre and was told same as yourself but posted on the RAC forum and got told otherwise and then pointed to the terms so got out within 14 days.

I'm with auto-aid as the wife and I share two cars. They seemed the most competitive. I'm not worried about having enough cash to pay for a tow, we've got credit cards.

I have had experiance of Green Flag and the A A during the past year. The A A package we get via my bank ( Black Horse) They relayed our Shogun plus caravan from Edinburgh back home to Cumbria over a period of 6 hours including change of flatbed truck plus hitching up the caravan. They relayed the car back to garage of choice and dropped caravan back home. Apart from the fact it seemed to take a long time I could not complain.

More recently daughters V W broke yet again and she is with Green Flag who picked her up from a fairly remote location and again dropped useless car off at garage to be repaired she has had to use them a few times over the past year and they have been very good so of the two I would say Green Flag wins this time. Thank fully daughter seen the light and got rid of Golf and bought another car instead

Auristocrat - did you mean to put in all those asterisks? I think you're trying to reproduce columns which unfortunately haven't come out quite right!
