.................engine going in Focus size car. Well, apparently according to Ford engineers the next stage is downsizing of the cars themselves, and that means weight reduction and less drag.

I say about time! Mondeo/Sierra/Cortina man no longer buys a Mondeo, because its the size of a Granada. He never wanted a Granada sized car. So, to get the size he wants he buys a Focus. The press and manufacturers would have us believe people are downsizing. I'm not sure that's the case. If Cavalier man wants a Cavalier sized car he buys an Astra. Thats not downsizing. Just my thoughts...........

Wow, you are a one-man forum, aren't you? :)

A Pug 207 is the same size as the old 306. A current Fiesta is bigger than the Escorts my folks bought in the 80s. The new Mondeo is a monster compared to mine, so much the new model Focus is looking like a forerunner in my quest for something to replace the old Mondeo.

Smaller cars tend not to mean less drag, since form is more important than frontal area. There's more scope for an aerodynamic shape in a larger car than a small one.

I think you'll find the 1.0 Turbo (I can't bring myself to say ecoboost) is not going to be a game changer, in the same way that the 0.9litre twin air wasn't for Fiat. Or the 1275 A-seriesTurbo was for Austin.

When was anything from ford a game changer? lol

Hey! Ford once invented a car which exploded if you shunted it up the rear. If thats not innovation i dont know what is.

Saab never came up with that.

The only significant thing in recent times I can attribute to ford is the reduction in reliability of both mazda and volvo

What next for Ford after the 1.0 Ecoboost.... - unthrottled

That's not fair. I've never been a fan of Ford (prefer the General), but you can't pin Volvo's and Mazda's decline on Ford. The old model of producing safe, reliable, but stodgy cars isn't viable any more. £1.30/litre fuel and BIK tax blew that model out of the water. The public has chosen a preference for fuel economy, yet has gravitated to heavier cars and doesn't want to pay extra . That means designers have to push the boundaries and make cheaper components work harder. Reliability is bound to suffer. Mazda and Volvo would not exist were it not for Ford. Neither would Jaguar.

Well both of those things are the fault of the Government, so blame them for poor car reliability. They've changed the market and carmakers have to act. Just as we reached the pinnacle of reliability, the goalposts move and the industry has to change and develop new things.

People want everything from their cars. Cheap to run, super reliable etc. It wasnt that long ago Britain echoed to the sound of spluttering Austin's on a Monday morning, in an age where if a car worked half the time we viewed it as good going!

I dont see why you're a 'fan' of GM though. I dont mind them but i just find them rather uninteresting.

They are uninteresting. But they're cheap and they generally work well. On the 'bang for yer buck' measure, they're pretty good.

Pretty much every problem i've had with my mazda 6 is something that ford had input in.

The 1st gen mazda 6 (02-07) had a lot of electrical faults - never seen before in a mazda (or even a Jap car for that matter). The 2nd gen mazda 6 (less ford input) has proved to be more reliable in terms of electrics.

The S40 when it came out - so many electrical issues (not normal for a volvo). The 2.0D even had probs with the throttle body which is apparantly a well known ford problem.

Lots of cars have problems with throttle bodies.

I doubt these small car companies could survive if they were entirely independant.

No one would buy a Volvo 240 any more.

The best part of my Mondeo is the engine, the good old Mazda MZR. It's solid, shame about the rest of the car.

I'm a bit worried about your obsession with Saab. We all know they're your favourite cars. You don't need to keep going on about Saabs. That is so tiresome. I think Jaguars would make a far better topic. I don't think you like Jaguars. Shame on you.

I dont get the anti-Ford brigade. They make fantastic cars and anybody who thinks otherwise is a plank.

What next for Ford after the 1.0 Ecoboost.... - balleballe

He's not alone. I hate Jaguars too :D

Remind me of 'posh' middle age snooty men with a receeding hairline

The day they lost their round lights they became great :D

I do like the XF, even the one with the Subaru head lights. That has to be the best looking saloon Jaguar ever. I can't remember what it replaced. I don't think the previous one sold anywhere near as well.

I think it's one of the best looking cars on the road, IMO

"It wasn't that long ago Britain echoed to the sound of spluttering Austins on a Monday morning,"

Yes, in the days when Red Robbo dictated how they were made. But if you go back to the 50s, Austins were the ones that started first time, unlike Fords and Vauxhalls. Hillmans (Hillmen?) were even worse because they were stodgy and underpowered as well as unreliable.
