Rover 25 - Re-taxing my Cat D written off car - noonoo1966

Please can someone help!! My trusty old Rover was written off about 5 months ago as it was damaged down the passenger side by another driver, It was written off because it wasn't worth repairing. My insurance company made me a cash offer and it was classified a Cat D, I had to have it re-MOT'd even tho it was purely cosmetic damage and I had only had it MOT's about 2 weeks before the accident-very annoying! My insurance company re-insured it and I realised the other day I had not received my tax reminder which ran out at the end of December.

How do I re-tax it if I have no reminder, looked at DVLA's website and am wondering if I have to take it for an inspection to have it verified.... i seem to remember being put on a 3 way telcon with myself, the DVLA and my ins co during the time of me negotiating buying my car back from them, and they mentionied something about an inspection when i next need to tax my car...

i am in the process of trying to sort out a new car but i obviously need to tax it until i have done so.... any advice would be welcomed thank you. Happy New Year!

AFAIK Cat D does not require the VIC inspection. www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVeh...7

Can some one advsie me about recorded cars?

As far as I can tell, Cat A & Cat B can not be repaied, but Cat C & D can be repaired and put back on the road.

I have seen a lot of CAT D car for sale, already repaired, and they do appear to represent good value.

But CAT D car do not seem to make sense to me when on newer cars.

I understand with an older car, minor damage may make it uneconomical to repair, so the car is written off (CAT D. The damage might still be just cosmetic and someone could drive it without doing all the repairs, or any repairs even sometimes.

But I have seen new (2010/11) prestige vehicles (BMW / Audi) for sale as CAT D. How can this really be? Surely such a vehicle needs a massive amount of damage before it is beyond economic repair, but should then be CAT A or B and not safe to drive any more?

New(ish) cars can suffer expensive damage without distorting anything - head on into a tree will wreck the engine at only moderate speeds without necessarily twisting the bodyshell - but of course the cost of a new engine added to the inevitable frontal cosmetics would be expensive on any car.

Water damage (probably hidden) can and will write a new car off. Likewise fire damage from an electrical problem. Stolen/recovered will probably be a cat D as well.

When knowingly buying a cat C or D it is always wise to ask for photos of the 'before' damage.
