KIA Picanto - Accidentally starting car in gear, with clutch out - kiaowner

Hi, Can anyone please put my mind at rest.

I have a very nice Kia Picanto, only18 months old. As we have been away a lot recently, and not using the car. With all this wet and damp weather I found that the handbrake was starting to 'seize up' on the driveway.

In order to try and combat this, i have recently stated parking the car on the driveway with the car wheels 'chocked' at the front with the handbrake off, and an extra precaution of leaving the car in gear.

However, as i am so used to leaving the car in neutral, when parked, I have twice now forgotten that i had left it in gear and attempted to start the car with the clutch out.

The car of course lurched forward, and i only kept the key turned in the ignition for a split second.

My question is, am i likely to have done any kind of damage to either the gearbox or starter motor, in accidentally starting the car in gear?

As far as I can tell everything is working correctly and it starts first time without problem.

So, can i safely assume that i will probably have got away with it on these two isolated occasions, or is it likely to cause me problems in the future.

Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

A trick used to get a broken down car off the road (if the battery and starter are still working) is to put it in first gear and use the starter to propel it - not recommended except in emergencies, though.

Done it myself a couple of times, didn't cause any problem .

Yup!

The strain will obviously be much worse for a diesel than a petrol. Should still be ok if you don't make a habit of it.

I have driven cars considerable distances with a non working clutch which means you have to start it in gear, so far I have not caused any damage that I am aware of.

I always leave my car in gear when parked - you never know whan the handbrake is going to let you down.

Haven't we all done this at some time?

It's never caused me a problem either but doing it with the handbrake on would be a worse idea.

Yes we've all done it - and doing it with the handbrake on makes surprisingly little difference !!!

It makes all the difference in the world if you're parked with the nose close to something else at the time......;-}

You won't have damaged anything, but as part of the start up it is kinder on the transmission to depress the clutch every time, whether it is in neutral or not.

On many modern cars you now have no choice as the car won't start until the clutch is depressed.

Right--- the handbrake problem... My Fiesta 1.4 Tdci has that problem on icy Winter mornings - the handbrake locks on. I had the back wheels off and sprayed around the handbrake cable ends with 3-in-One 'Anti-Sieze Copper Grease', but the bit that was sticking appeared to be where the two cables join the equaliser bit with the singe cable going through to the handbrake lever. I can't physically see that, because the two seperate cables disappear behind the silvered material which protects from the heat of the exhaust. However, putting a mat down and lying on my back, I squirt Duck-Oil in as far under the reflective sheet as I can, and that keeps the handbrake free.

I'm a firm believer in Duck-Oil. It was the only thing that stopped my Mini door locks icing up many years ago (proper Mini, not the BMW thing), and using the little plastic straw which comes with the can, it frees up the door and boot locks on the Fiesta, which have a habit of going 'sticky'.

I would suspect the the main cable has water in it, your duck oil should displace it if you can get it to run into the cable.

Yes, Peter... I've had a squirt from the inside as well. I needed to lift the handbrake lever cover and give the cable-end nut a few turns 'cos it was coming up a few too many clicks for my liking.

Hi Kia owner -- A practice that I have used ever since I started driving, motorbikes and cars (43 years) is to disengage the clutch, this disengages the gearbox and releaves some of the stress on the starter motor and battery. On modern motorcycles you cannot start the bike until you have pulled in the clutch leaver. This practice has now become second nature to me. In a car you put one foot on the clutch and the other on the brake pedal, No problems
