Why when someone has a problem in Technical can't they just give more information of the problem to hand rather than "car cuts out" etc?

Make, model , year, fuel type needs to be in the information better still before it can be posted up.

We don't have a crystall ball to help you.

And the original op fails to come back after posting for several days if at all.

You've missed the classic: "what is making my engine light come on?" or its derivitives.

It's like the posters who are looking for a car wheel, don't tell the size and are too lazy to search ebay.

See Clio post..

And the Clio post was originally posted in 2004 and resurrected by someone plugging their business. Victorbox then becomes a 'victim' wasting time searching ebay for them.

Maybe there should be a check box prior to posting:-

I suppose many people do not have any idea about the mechanics of a motor car and are also pretty desperate and are looking for some type of answer to their problem. It is slightly annoying when the answer can be easily found by a simple google or they fail to keep the forum informed of the outcome but it takes all sorts and it adds a bit of interest.

I quite agree, Piston Power, although Collos's point is also valid. Common sense should suggest that if you have a problem and want help with it, you should give as much information as possible (and also post the question in the Technical section).

It's a month old this one but I am going to add my weight to it nonetheless. Coz I am getting vexed over this issue.

There is an saying that "there is no such thing as a dumb question". Well I am not sure any more looking at what gets asked on HJ. And I am not talking about someone who genuinely does not know something that maybe common knowledge to others. That's absolutely fine - we all have to learn.

What I am talking about is the thinking out loud that goes on with many of the postings here. It doesn't help you or anyone who wishes to assist with a query when basic information is missing. It isn't our job to interrogate you over basic information -- you have to provide it.

The latest posting I see concerns a Citroen that won't start after 3 weeks of ownership - the battery has gone flat. Firstly is the car new or secondhand - the answers will be much different based on those two facts alone. Also, ideally it should have been listed under "Technical".

Believe it or not there are clever people out here who will help, but if they are like me I won't get down in the weeds just to find out what model car it is or any other basic information - we have better things to do than breast feed others. Stop asking blind and dead-end questions.

Incidentally, telling us the colour of your car isn't relevant.

Regards.

Incidentally, telling us the colour of your car isn't relevant.

Of course it's relevant.. How can you suggest that colour does not matter?

Silver cars start better as the silver reflects heat within the engine compartment and keeps the engine warmer.. So they start easier.

Total rubbish.

Black cars start better because they absorb visible length electromagnetic radiation better than silver ones!

Sorry MADf is right ,
The majority of heat is reflected from the inside of the bonnet ,back to the components.so silver should be better ,possibly ?

Unless you have a glowing exhaust manifold, all the radiation will be in the near to far Infra red. Silver is reflective to visible radiation but not IR. (doesn't stop idiots putting foil behind their radiators to try to reflect heat back into the radiator though!)

I can't believe how far this spoof discussion has gone on for!

What do you readers think is the best angle of the exhaust tip in order to make the best use of the thrust from the exiting exhaust gases? Up to give more traction to the back axle, to the right to counteract the effect of the camber on the road, to the left to counter the effect of negative camber or straight back to provide maximum propulsion?

Green cars are unlucky, red cars are more reliable, blue cars are boring, siver cars are faster !!!

On a serious note, those who ask questions do so because they don't know the answer - so why should we expect them to know what information to give us to answer the question - some interrogation of questioners is inevitable.

Eight out of ten cats, who expressed a preference, said they preferred to sleep on top of the front wheel under the wheelarch of black cars, as they are warmer.

Eight out of ten cats, who expressed a preference, said they preferred to sleep on top of the front wheel under the wheelarch of black cars, as they are warmer.

But the other two cats - of greater intelligence - never slept on top of the front wheel . They had seen cats been woken from their slumbers by car owners who started off at high speed and crushed the said stupid cats under the front wheels.

Black cars are unlucky for cats..

If you butter the back of a cat and throw if from a window 20 storeys up, have you thus created a perpertual motion machine?

Also silver is reflective to IR. I have just done that experiment with my Yr 8 class :-D

Also silver is reflective to IR.

Really??

Poor information on posting. - Bobbin Threadbare

Yes. Low emissivity (0.05 at most) and high reflectivity to e-m radiation.
