Renault Clio 1.2 16v 2001 Y plate - Problem on startup - halloweenjack

Hi i'm looking for some advice. I have had two instances recently where the following has happened when starting the car.

When i start up the engine it fires ok, but then the revs keep going up and down almost to the verge of stalling. Then for a few seconds the revs seem fine, but then proceed to go upto 2500rpm and will not move when i depress the accelerator. At this point the battery warning light comes on as well. The battery is less than 6months old.

If i then restart the engine..it does exactly the same thing. Thanks for any advice.
