Vauxhall Astra 1.6club 8valve petrol - Oil dip level - haggisandneeps

Astra (2002 & 91,000miles). From monitoring in earlier years I know engine now uses oil at approx 1ml per mile Oil level dips fine when it has just been changed but after a month or two it is almost impossible to get a true dip. Level continues to show 'full' when it must have used oil (based on mileage driven). Don't want to overfill or run too low either. What is likely cause and solution?

Vauxhall Astra 1.6club 8valve petrol - Oil dip level - RT

Using the following procedure:-

First thing in the morning before starting the engine, remove dipstick and wipe it clean.

Re-insert fully and then remove to see the oil line on the dipstick.

If you don't wipe it first, the draining oil adds to the apparent level.

At 1ml per mile, that's 1 litre per 1,000 miles which is the lower limit of acceptability, ie when the engine needs serious internal attention. Vauxhall FamilyI 1 engines of that era would do better than 0.5 litre per 10,000 miles when in good condition even at 100,000 miles, at least mine did.

I agree with RT, but have you also considered you may now be using a better oil that doesn't get 'used' as before?
