Not a Corsa. I learnt to drive in one - uncomfortable seats and unreliable mechanicals.

For a thousand quid, you're looking at year 2000 ish Nissan Almeras, Toyota Corollas, Fiestas, very high mileage Audi A3s, Nissan Micras from the late 90s and a bunch of Fiat Puntos. Couple of Honda Civics. I put your criteria (hatchback, auto, £1k into Autotrader).

There are a handful of VW Polos/Golf around the 10-12 years old mark that are low mileage. Polos are cheap to insure.

I think you'd be best off steering clear of an auto gearbox in any small capacity car.

No good

The Nissan Almera Auto has a brilliant gearbox complete with overdrive. It's of old fashioned construction but on a cheapish older car this is a good thing as it is very reliable. Engines are very sturdy and have a chain cam.

N.B. The Micra is very different and has a CVT gearbox - usually bad new on an old car.
