From what I've seen and read on t'Internet, it is generally considered that low-profile tyres are not good in snow, and my local tyre-fitter agrees with that. I also read that in those countries where it's a legal requirement to fit snow tyres, owners prefer to save their expensive alloys from Winter salt damage by changing to steel rims and snow tyres. A smaller wheel gives a narrower tyre for the same overall diameter, and a narrower tyre is also better in snow. A Google search will come up with a couple of alloy-wheel suppliers who are now stocking German-made (KFZ) steel wheels fitted with snow tyres as a full set for most cars. Wheelbasealloys.com is one I've found. This is what they offer for my Fiesta--

Another one - www.coordsport.com--

It's also interesting to read some of the Winter-tyre manufacturers' web-sites and watch some of the videos - Vredestein tyres on apollovredestein.com and Nokian tyres on www.nokiantyres.com
No snow in Ramsbottom yet. Muddy though....
