Talking to my friendly local indy garage this morning, and he has been on a course abour emissions and dpf in particular, and says that some cities are planning to ban diesels altogether because the particles that are released after "burning" are even moe toxic and finer than previously thought,

By the way one middle eastern country has banned the use of diesel engines in passenger cars and taxis...

I'm not surprised. I remember when I was still in physics research a few years ago, and carbon nanotubes were becoming popular (along with other 'nano' sized things) and there was some concern over the effects on humans if they were breathed in. Mostly because this type of technology and any 'waste' particles produced have never been studied in any lengthy detail.

About time to. LJKS said it years ago.

Clearly the nano state is taking over.... :)

Seriously, I've had a nagging feeling for some time that someone will come up with a compelling argument like this that gets taken up by the Press - and the bottom drops out of the diesel car market.

It's ironic that - given that secondhand diesels are rather less desirable because of the well-documented problems with DPFs and other appendages - we may find that they weren't doing much good anyway.

My last car was a diesel and held its value very well indeed - but I'm glad on the whole that the current one is petrol-powered.

Woo hoo! No more buses!

This is what you get when Governments get obsessed by natural non-pollutants like co2 and encourage the switch to diesels which are low on co2 but high on everything that matters in terms of emissions.

This is what you get when you have a government more interested in having their ludicrous expenses payed for....happy days!

I thought that petrol engines also emitted small carbon particles and were as bad as diesels in that respect?

Make no mistake, ever higher extra taxes for daring to take a car anywhere are coming.

There's nothing else left to tax, with people losing jobs and many workers getting tax break subsidies as salries plummet, then some one will have to make the increasing gap up, the evil motorist might as well be the one.

Anyway, MP's pensions and expenses need to be paid for.

As if we weren't paying enough tax already....If they're not careful they're going to force out alot of professionals to other countries who dont have rediculous taxing. I already know of so many who have left!

Of course the Government could abolish all quango's, halve expenses, halve foreign aid, stop giving aid to nations with space programs, stop damaging business with restrictive taxes, apply VAT to many products which are still exempt wrongly, slash local authority budgets even further, deport foreign criminals instead of give them homes and compensation for 'loss of liberty' and many other things to get the budgets under control but thats too simple and doesnt kick the motorist.

Or - keep all those things but stop supporting America with it's war on 'oil'

See now there's you two BB and Jamie, both capable of independent thought, we need a few million more actually able to see past the constant propaganda and we might just end up with a democracy.

Not in my lifetime.

If only. Anyway - would there really be a time where the Government will ban diesels? It's the backbone of our logistic system - I wonder what would happen
make no mistake they're coming - Euro VI emissions control - jamie745

Even this Government isnt stupid enough to ban diesel. Nearly, but not quite. Not that the Government of the UK has given any consideration to our logistics industry at all for about 20 years. I think there is a bit more common sense being spoken on green issues now Labour are out of power, its even been uttered in the commons very quietly that carbon taxes may actually not be a good idea. Such blasphemy wouldve seen you nailed to a wooden cross a couple of years ago.

If diesel sales werent so profitable for the Treasury then LPG may well take over as the fuel for logistics, company cars, buses, taxi's etc. In 2009 the Labour Government committed to a price plan for LPG to make it at least 40p less than petrol which was signed until 2012 and this Government is expected to extend that by another 5 years according to one Conservative MP.

Its funny how the Americans talk about an 'addiction to oil' we dont have an addiction to oil, our Government has an addiction to Fuel Duty.

We've been saying on here for some time the diesel boom will bust, just like anything else does. Peak diesel reliability was about ten years ago, now they're efficient but more likely to go wrong and most of us on here find better value in petrol alternatives and its those petrol alternatives which in 5 years may be in higher demand than they are now.

"The [Spanish] cabinet on Friday approved new legislation which will allow Spanish cities to close zones to the most polluting vehicles. Under the plan all vehicles will be obliged to display a coloured and numbered sticker, one of five colours according to how ‘dirty’ the vehicle is. The stickers range from Red to Green, and will be numbered from 1 to 4+, where 1 is for the most polluting vehicles, and all those registered before 1992. The 4+ grade is reserved for electric, hybrid and gas vehicles. Municipalities can choose to only allow the clean models access to certain zones, and electric, hybrid or gas cars will get positive discrimination when it comes to parking, loading or unloading and also enjoy cheaper tolls"

In Greece, they came up with a plan to reduce the numbers of cars in cities-you could only drive into cities on odd numbered days if your car had an odd numbered registration and vice-versa.Result-everyone bought a second car.

Great I'll get the horse fit and we can go back to the good all days of fertilising the roses with all the poop picked up. we will still have buses in sunny Basingstoke as they are reportedly running on some eco fuel or other. I am worried the government will put fuel duty on hay and impose a minimum tread depth on horseshoes.

It really is hilarious that these cities and councils actually view motor vehicles as 'polluting' because i think they should be forced to pick up a history book and see what conditions were like before the motorcar.

More people died in London every year from diseases contracted from horse manure alone than what die on all of Britains roads now. People used to use stilts to walk above the streets literally paved with excrement and no thats not a joke.

The motorcar was a major environmental saviour, it cleaned up our cities and saved a lot of lives. The motorcar isnt killing cities or polluting them, if it wasnt for the motorcar we'd still be getting cholera on a daily basis. It really is pathetic that people have forgotten history and now describe the motorcar as a dangerous pollutant. Ridiculous.

Deary me.

Sorry Jamie but my b******ks detector is in overdrive again. Yes the internal combustion engine freed us from burying London in horse poo. But at the cost of replacing one 'pollutant' with several others. NOx, SO2, CO and until very recently lead all poured from exhausts. Catalysts, low sulphur diesel/petrol DPF etc all help reduce these things or turn them into something less harmful. Following a London Bus on a bike you see no visible discharge and only mild olfactory evidence of anything, Bit it's still there; a few clear windless days and London has a visible photchemical smog.

Until we've sorted hydrogen power and tailpipes spout water vehicles pollute.

Cholera was fixed by Mr Bazalgette and his drains.

Ive already agreed we should ban all buses from cities. They are the most polluting things on the road and have escaped the pathetic restrictions put on cars for too long.

Pollution is a byproduct of life, deal with it. Yes we could shut everything down tomorrow but then we'd have no movement, no economy and no life so thats hardly productive. Nations like Greece who come up with communistical hairbrained schemes like the one mentioned above deserve to go bankrupt. 'Oh no a car might drive past us, quick lets ban it! Then we'll be safe!!!!'

I am a fan of technical advances like some of what you mention there but i am not a fan of the 'lets just ban the cars cos thats easier' approach which so many Governments and councils buy into, its not productive, its a pathetic 'solution' spouted by hippies who believe the World wont be healed until humans are forced back into caves.

DPF etc all help reduce these things or turn them into something less harmful.

But DPF's go wrong easily and cause owners significant financial problems so people arent going to buy them. You need to balance the emissions malarky with economic viability. Screwing our economy just to meet some emissions standards is not how this nation turned a quarter of the world pink is it?
