Walking to the paper shop this morning I saw an AA van by a Corolla - not a common sight, Toyotas being generally reliable. It seems the lady driving it had just borrowed it and succeeded in filling this petrol car with diesel.

The AA guy who was pumping the fuel out said she'd managed to get the large diesel nozzle far enough in to fill without spilling, quite an achievement, probably not appreciated by whoever she'd borrowed it from.

You know you can get this little device now which you stick on the inside of your filler flap with a speaker on it and the moment light hits it it'll shout 'warning!! this is a diesel!!' which is handy for older cars without 'easyfuel systems' and the like.

Had to look at this one, see the proof, the only way to get a Corolla to conk out is sabotage.

I was filling a van with diesel, 75 litres or thereabouts, and I noticed the guy at an adjacent pump was having problems. When I'd finished, I walked round the back of his car and noticed it didn't have any 'D' badging so I politely asked if he was aware he was putting diesel in it. I was met with a stream of invective.

He'd managed to put a couple of litres in to my tankful. Proves the value of different sized filler necks.

He did come and find me to apologise for his language.

I remember when we had our first dlesel car - SWMBO's Peugeot 205 GRD in 1988 - there were fewer diesel cars, especially small ones, that there are now. I was filling it up with diesel and a charming Indian gentleman at a nearby pump, seeing me, came running over and cried 'No,no,no. Terrible damage'.

I tried to persuade him that there would be terrible damage if I didn't fill it with diesel, but he wasn't convinced. But I did thank him for his kind concern.

I witnessed a misfuel recently, waiting behind a Golf at the petrol station and i observed this plank (you know the type of gentlemen, tight t-shirt, hair product, earrings) who was more interested in chatting with his passengers than paying attention and began to fill with petrol just as i noticed the 'TDi' on the back of his car.

I didnt say anything. The consequences were hilarious and i felt warm yet devilish inside.

I thought this was a motoring forum to help out fellow motorists...
I wear the odd t-shirt and maybe a bit of gel occasionally but no earring ( well not for twenty years) And I have never filled my car with the wrong fuel. But if I did see someone make the mistake of filling their car with the wrong fuel, I hope that I am not such a "plank" as not for help out.

Yep my first post !!

I saw a young lad - probably recently passed driving an 02 plate Audi A3 TDI. He pulled out the petrol pump and started pumping - as soon as I saw I popped my head out the window and shouted to him that his car's a diesel. Luckily he had only put in a litre or so of petrol.

A few weeks ago I saw a guy that looked like a right poser - suit with shirt looking around like "yeah, i'm the don" with a smug look on his face - had a brand spanking new Audi A6 3.0 TDI. I saw him pull out the vpower petrol and pump away, I just kept quite. After filling up I went to inflate my tyres at the air machine and just smiled when his car wouldnt start. I walked up casually and said to him "you sure you filled up with diesel" - the look on his face was simply priceless

See theres certain people who just bring it on themselves. Dont get me wrong, i have hair product and i even own t-shirts but this was the sp**** hair, tight t-shirt those jeans with waistbands round the knees. He was too busy talking to the two girls in his car to bother paying attention to what he was doing so i thought i'd leave that one to run its natural course.

Rhymes with a rude word for new-age traveller. When I saw the asterisks I thought you'd said s p a r s e which would also have got caught by the filter!

Vimto - welcome to the forum and yes, I like to think that most of us would help a fellow-motorist in this situation however they were dressed: although I have to confess that I don't often notice what other people are filling their tanks with.

Its a more accurate term than traveller because travellers seem reluctant to travel these days.

I am a nice person really Avant :)

When I was 16 I filled my Yamaha DT50 with diesel. It smoked and smelt like a BBQ. I tipped it upside down in a field and refueled.

When the engine seized up due to a non-OEM exhaust being too lean, there was still a fair amount of carbon on the head, though it had been running well enough.
