You will certainly need all your knowledge and an extremely good tool kit I would consider it a worse choice than your original idea.An exaust pipe will cost an arm and a leg absolutely horrendous on fuel ,on the plus side a really comfortable car if you have plenty of money to run it.

The AJ16 engines are lovely refined engines and the X300 is a lovely comfortable car but deeply punishing running costs always were its downside. At least its old enough to fall into lower tax brackets and if its got a good service history there shouldnt be too much wrong with it but parts are getting scarce now and ones you can find tend to require a bank loan to obtain.

Examine its bodywork closely as well as plenty of 90s Jag's have suffered from corrosion and mistreatment from owners who couldnt afford to maintain them properly.

If i may be so bold may i suggest an X-Type? Jaguar purists love to hate the X-Type (i dont think Jag had made a diesel or an estate before it) but it is post-Ford takeover, it shares many key components with the mk3 Mondeo, reliability record of Jaguar improved after this point, they're pretty cheap to buy now with the V6 engine and if you squint it looks like an XJ thats been bashed at the front and back to make it shorter.

Hi,
I would strongly agree with Jamie , the x type would be a better prospect than an ancient XJ6.
I've bought and sold a few of these ,I would suggest you buy a 2.0 front wheel drive version .

These are much cheaper to run than the complicated 4wd 2.5 versions .

Forget the jibes about the x types being mondeos ,they're smooth to drive ,have decent jag style interiors and externally have a lot of the styling cues of the xj6.

So much better looking than a 3 series BMW .

Thanks for this I've read HJ review of the x types sound terrible. But you reckon there ok ?
xj6 x300 - buying a JAG - jamie745

Yet HJ thinks the mk3 Mondeo is a very good car and the X-Type shares a lot of components with it. People love to bash the X-Type for being a 'Mondeo in drag' but if i cant criticise a Saab for being a posh Vauxhall then nobody can criticise an X-Type for being a fancy Mondeo.

I like the X-Type and financially they're a better proposition than an old XJ6.

Hi, X300 is a good car very comfortable ride and reasonable on fuel for a large exec. motor, I ran one for 3yr. average fuel 26, best 32 on motorway. I used independent specialist for servicing cheaper and more helpful than main agents. Regarding cost no exec. motor is cheap to run and never will be, thats why they are cheap to buy after 3yr, a lot of car little money, not an every day runabout.

Look on Jaguar Enthusiast web site all you want know about Jags , worth joining only about £30 per year and a good magazine each month.

Thanks for this I was going to give it to my wife to about 10 miles most dys and then maybe at weekends to drive round the country nothing crazy and not floor it if u get my drift.

What does your wife think about driving a tank I bet she would and rightly so prefer a mini.

xj6 x300 - buying a JAG - Collos25

Why can't you critisise Saab I had one and agree it was not as good as a Vectra but also had a X type 2.0d estate and did not think that was as good as a Mondeo I suppose that is why they still make Mondeos and finished x type off because of disastrous sale figures.

Don't forget the cheap way to run a big thirsty car is to run it on LPG. Half price motoring...if you fit all the criteria.

X300 was certainly better built than early S-Type's. There is only one way to run these cars: buy for sub-£1k and dispose of if/when it goes wrong.

The X300 driveline with the AJ16 and old 4-speed auto is actually quite long lived. Main enemy is rust, particularly on the chassis rails which kills them come MOT time.

You can also easily get a reasonable X308 XJ8 for £1-1.5k which have more modern electrics and engine. They rust as well and also watch out for failing gearboxes about 100k and O2 sensors packing up of which it needs 4 and they are expensive.

All like a drink and all are getting old but they are much more "Jaguar" to drive than the later S-Types and X-Types.

If you want an old XJ a visit to on one of the JEC summer meets could be worth while. There are always cars with for sale signs in the window, many of them with lots of history. Just remember if a car has a load of receipts you will need to keep adding to them.

Isnt it a bit sexist to presume a woman would automatically prefer a Mini over a big car?

(And a mini isnt exactly small these days is it?!)

Don't know if it's sexist but i doubt many women fall into stereotype.

SWMBO has driven virtually everything on the road, including motorcycles extensively and her own removals truck.

For sheer hooligan power and comfort her favourite was a Benz 500S class she chauffered extensively, she loves her present C2 VTS (manual box excepted) as it goes like hell but cos it doesn't look sporty she catches 'em unaware, but her favourite vehicle to drive for simple ease, all round visibilty, undaunted by road or surface conditions and the smoothest auto box was our Hilux.

We don't. I like big cars with big engines (and probably shouldn't be allowed to get anything with too much 'hooligan power' as I would likely lose my license).
