Just had my oil and filter changed at national tyres. The t*** who did it overfilled it by 1/2 cm on the dipstick!
I then just thought it had spilled out somewhere over the engine. On closer inspection it seems oil has managed to get up into the air filter. I have cleaned all the s*** out of the airbox and got the prat who did the oil to make the oil level right plus 10 quid back for cleaning.
i was told to check that breather pipes for blockages so they are now clear i think, i am unsure if they were blocked before but there was some s*** in them.
My local garage guy said that should clear it up.
Is the oiloverfilling related to the oil in the airbox?
If not what would cause it?
if it makes any difference the cars done 116k and K reg
Also should the oil filler be blowing or sucking if the cap is removed with the engine running?

If the cap is removed you should see a fine oil mist being blown out of the engine. (very fine)
Oil in air box may be due to pumping oil through the breather (if not blocked) due to worn piston rings/bores. If this is the case you will see it blowing when the oil filler cap is removed.
With the mileage your engine has done, if it has not had regular oil and filter changes, there is a good chance the rings are worn..
I would not attempt a repair cos the car is worth less than the costs of any repair...

Ed,
1/2 cm on the dipstick is really not very much, and I would not expect it to cause excessive oil mist to be pushed into the air filter box. Yes, check the breather system, with particular attention to the vacuum port in the underside of the filter fitted in the underside of the air filter box.
If you see oil back there inside 500 miles it indicates crankcase pressurisation due to compression loss past the piston rings.

Having cleaned the pipes out some oil has returned and i have recently only done about 140 miles.

Could i put a thicker oil in the engine at all?
Would this help at all?

You don't say what age it is: but if it is more than 10 years old, £350 for a car with a year's MOT is probably right if you can find a buyer.
I'd use a 20/50 oil : yes I know it is thicker than designed but it might stop oil throw.
Personally I'd just drive it till it drops..

Beware!!
I used to drive a 1.3CVH (yes not OHV) which had a habit of throwing oil up into the air filter, which then dropped onto the exhaust manifold, which then after driving fast on a motorway and stopping for traffic CAUGHT FIRE! .

that whats happened to me, oil draining out of the filter drain hole onto the manifold. Was only smoking though wasnt enough oil to catch fire i dont think thank god

its a 1992 Escort LX k plate
well i dont know what went in, its the standard stuff used by national tyres for there £10 oil & filter jobby.
Could just drive it and see i suppose, or park it somewhere where you wouldnt want to spend a night and see if its there a week later!
No £350 you reckon? Sounds about right i suppose.
