I've been with the Co-op for a few years and they've always been really competitive and I think the customer service is great.

I have recently bought much newer car (1 year old Peugeot 3008) and initially I swapped the existing policy to the new car. Renewal is now due and coming in at £763. I found out I could save about £150 if I cancel policy and take out another through the Co-op website (which I think is pretty shoddy) but I also put my details into Confused.com and Esure came out at £400.

I've read a bit on a review site about how their customer service is pretty poor and how they charge random admin fees for things but as I'd be saving £150 (after taking out separate breakdown cover ) from that point of view it's worth it. Also I don't "need" my car much so if the worst happened and they were dragging their heels then it wouldn't be a disaster.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of them or any general advice?

Unhelpful people.

I tried to change cars when insured with them.

A real palaver and very very very unhelpful.

Never ever again.

HI.
like you changed via confused.com. (back when I had a Subaru Impreza.)
then changed car, and ran my wifes old volvo we'd owned for almost 9 of its 12 years until big bills loomed,
then just (a few weeks ago) bought a 2008 lancer mitsubishi 1.8 petrol
.
as you can imagine had a refund when changing to the volvo and another one when changing to the lancer (the lancer is only grp8 the subaru was 13.)
.,
sorry can;t tell you what there like with claims as in the 3 years i've been using them, not made a claim, but when I've been chopping and changing cars, and swapping a private place around no additional charges have been made.
.
I currently pay £350 for my car with myself and my wife full no claims currently at 72% discount (goes up to 75% with esure) and ring around each year just to keep an eye on prices...
.
i pay extra for the protected no claims and legal cover....in the £350 final price. oh and courtesy car as well.....

I honestly believe that, generally, whatever advice you receive (or give) re. insurance can be fine at the time - but a year later it can all change. And also the company that's well priced for you and your area/car etc. may well be the opposite for someone else. I've used Go Compare for a couple of years to get the list of prices from the cheapest to the dearest and then compared that to the results of recent-ish customer service surveys.

The list was.
NFU Mutual (probably good, but VERY dear for me, here in Devon).
RIAS (or over 50's)
Frizell (If you qualify)
Saga (About which you know)
LV (Liverpol Vic)
Fortis
Adrian Flux
NIG
Co-op

Marks and Spencer. Prudential and RSA (Morethan) have also been mentioned along the way for good service.

I'm currently with Adrian Flux. as well as Saga. Adrian Flux have been OK for me and were prepared to haggle. Morethan were good when I claimed 10 years ago (but I won't now use foreign call centres). Saga have been OK to date - for me!

Personally I always ask how much they'll charge in admin fees to change details if required (for winter tyres etc.) and always notice how well the customer service comes across. But every year I check round. There's no loyalty now and very little point, in my opinion. Whoever you're with you won't know how good they are till you claim.

I also believe that it comes down to the individual advisor you speak to at whichever ins co you use.
My LR Discovery (16 yrs old ) is insured with Sureterm Direct and when I came to sell my fully off road prepared model and replace it with the one I have now I was told by one advisor that because the new one wasn't modified for off road use that they could no longer insure it. When I got a date to collect the car I rang back to Sureterm to cancel my policy and move somewhere else the advisor this time said that there was no problem and just swapped the details over, no charge for doing so ( I'm allowed one free change per year apparently ) and he also offered me £26 refund as it was slightly cheaper for my now non modded disco.

Just goes to show it's not just the companies but also the advisors that contribute to people's opinions on their level of service.

I find esure premiums competitive but they do charge per diem for foreign use which can run the cost up a bit. The lot that are to do with 1066 charge £30 for a change of address! Must cost all of 10p for an operator to key in the change!

I'm with Esure and changed mid policy from a CRV to a Mondeo this year.

It couldn't have been simpler.

Just a phone call to them, they asked for confirmation from me by email, and I had a new certificate of insurance to print out by return.

No cost whatsoever to change either.

I have been with Esure 10 yrs x 2 x cars - they get the premiums annually as they are the most competitive "known name" on comparison sites for me.

I changed car from Honda to Xtrail 4 years ago - charged me £25 - refunded when I said 1 x change in 6 years was surely reasonable - refunded £25 + £25 "annoyance money".

I agree that they seem to be a good company.

I have had two cars insured with them for a number of years, including the protected for life (ish) NCB. I was charged an extra £60 per year for having modified alloys but that is about my only grumble.

In my experience the "best" insurer depends on what car you have got. So best to shop around when you change model.

Insurers have to make a profit. That's why cheap prices and good service don't always go hand in hand.

Thanks all. Going to give them a go!

My wife and I had both cars insured thru Esure because they were the cheapest and appeared to be good value. This all changed when my wifes car was damaged in a carpark by someone else's door blowing out of their grasp and putting a big dent in the nearside passenger door. Only then did we realise how rubbish they were. I ended up doing all the chasing round trying to sort the paperwork out and get the car repaired

The next problem was my fault driving into the back of a Fiesta at walking pace with minimal damage to the Fiesta and no damage to our C3.

Same rigmarole again, this time with the other driving ringing me at home asking why my insurer had not actioned their claim after several weeks.

Esure said it would be best if I paid the claim myself. Needless to say as far as they are concerned, I voted with my feet.

This is merely my experience of them...hope it helps.
