Speed limit rising from 70-80mph - drivermeider

What do people think of the government raising the motorway speed limits to 80mph?

I personally agree with it

- the 70 mph speed limit has been around for 44 years now. I know in those days there was not as much traffic but everything is relative.

-There is more traffic now but cars are much safer, they have the ability to stop a lot quicker and we are all used to having the amount of cars on the road that there is.

-Interestingly, France and Luxembourg have weather dependent speed restrictions:-when it raining 110kph, when not, 130kph...And obviously there is Germany who don't have a speed limit but recommend 130kph (70mph) I don;t know what the stats are for these in terms of fatality rates from crashes??

I think there's no denying that the severity of an accident will be higher with greater speed but i think the causation of such as tiredness and drink, like the government have been successfully campaigning against, should be addressed..

The Germans certainly DO have a speed limit! Some autobahns have no limits but many do and all non-autobahn roads have various limits depending on whether they are in towns or open country.
