As someone who has seen both sides of the picture, been hit by a car that came out of a gateway, t-boned, (twice) and yes managed to cut up a biker too many years later, i feel that it is lack of attention and indeed lack of caring nowadays for anyone else on the road. i was never a very fast rider, my reflexes were never good enough from 45 years ago to 12 years ago when i gave up and sold my trusty trident after moving back to london. I so often see drivers of all types on mobile phones while driving, and just yesterday saw a young lady drive into the back of the car in front very very slowly as she was looking at her passenger as she talked to her. oblivious to the car in front stopping at a roundabout . there was no damage and nobody got upset and the car in front that was hit actually drove off....

As a cyclist, I find the only way to make yourself visible is to dominate the cars by taking up a full carriageway sometimes, you have to judge it by noise and smell.

I think it's important to adopt defensive driving as 1litre above.

After all, some people exiting drives can only see traffic when their car nose is actually on the road, pedestrians walk about behind parked cars and motorcyclists over or under take often at the stupidist of places..

When I go round roundabouts with another car beside me, I expect it may decide to go straight ahead if it's on my left or turn left if on my right. So I just quickly look to make sure.

Yes it makes for more vigilance and is tiring but no worse than watching for cats deciding to run across a road when you see them beside it.

Whilst I cannot plan for every eventuality, I assume all motorcylists are 100% reckless idiots and cyclist wobbling fools. As for horses - we have a lot here - I assume they will bolt and the owner not be able to control them.

Effect on journey time? None. Effect on mental state? Less hassle.

I just assume everybody is a total brainless idiot and act accordingly. You cant trust anybody to show even a basic level of common sense anymore. Cyclists generally arent too bad but motorcyclists are the only type of individual to undertake and speed up just as they see a car pulling out of a driveway with the drivers view obscured by a hedge. Pedestrians are generally the worst, the people who cross a road on a blind bend or wait until the green man turns red then run across just as ques of roaring traffic come round the corner, the type who flail their arms around as they trot across but the legs dont actually move any faster, then look at the cars as if to say 'ooo, silly me!' and smile at you. Thats why these 'shared streets' simply do not work here and any frequent HJ reader will know i am a massive critic of such a poor idea, you simply cannot give pedestrians the right of way on a road. I know technically nobody has 'right of way' on a shared street but pedestrians just meander about without even slightly moving the neck to see if anythings coming (perhaps they think its a pedestrian walkway?) and as someone who was taught the green cross code and given demonstrations of how to use zebra crossing in 'road safety day' at school i find that baffling.

As for other motorists, typical phone using speeding general lack of common sense fare really.

Accidents are tremendous fun though, that and all the insurance afterwards.

Personally I can't wait till the next one, I might manage a broken bone or two for a bit of variety.
