So you bought a used car with 103.000 miles on it 18 months ago and it now needs 2k spending on it and you seriously expect the manufacturer to stump up some of that?

If you bought it from a VW dealer and it has an absolutely complete VW service history from day one to the present day it might be worth having a word with the dealer-if not I think you are on your own.

No sorry abit confusing what i wrote we bought the car from car giant with 52,000 on in january 10 that was after we had bought another reliable car!! the toyota avensis which we had for less than amonth when the head gasket and aload of other major problems came up so anyway after along drawn out thing we got the passat which we love we have always serviced it well before the 10,000 miles used all the correct very expensive oil and have looked after it very well the other day whilst on the motorway a warning light came on and went into safe mode 25 mph we took it to the garage and they said it was a senor that needed changing which we ordered the mechanic said it was ok to potter about town in so we carried on using it whilst waiting for the part - no other transport - anyway we were driving along a couple of days later when the light came up saying loss of oil pressure so we stopped straight away and the aa came and took it back to the garage the mechanic said it was the turbo and suggested we got a reconditioned one which he got for us £ 485 + vat and fitted only to find we still had the problem after further investigation he said its the engine we need to get it converted to a gear driven engine which vw are the only people who sell and fit so we are stuck with a car which if we get it repaired it will be getting on for £2k if that is the problem so we really dont know what to do now baring in mind we need to replace the steering rack and the 5th gear problem which has recently started we use this car for work a taxi hence the miles but we have 2 mot a year which is much more intence than a usual mot and as i said we have serviced it on or before time in most cases our only option we can see at the moment is to sell the car in bits unless anyone else has any ideas as atthe moment we are at our wits end as what to do for the best we still owe money on the car so need to get back at least £3,000 to finish paying for it and the money for the turbo which we have been told should be easy enough to sell just got four new tyres too !!

Jason - I hope you'll get some advice, but although we don't like to pick people up for grammar etc., with no paragraphs or full stops a reader will lose the will to live! I can't even put some paras in as I do sometimes, as there are no pauses.

".... they said it was a senor that needed changing...." Maybe you need a SEAT. :)

-it would seem that you're not the only one with problems with a diesel passat.

Decision-sell it for spares or pay a decent indy workshop to rebuild it, and then sell it for a bit more. You will be wasting your time/breath talking to VW. Sorry can't offer anything more positive.

hi after some long debating about our car we are now looking into getting a new engine or recon one we are just so worried about choosing the wrong company to get one from is there anyone who can recomend one as its alot of money and having never been down this route its so hard to know. also when we have called some of the comapnys they are giving conflicking advice one said they dont have to cog run engines as the cogs shear off we have the chain run engine which needs to be changed so we are not sure what to do now any ideas ?

I thought all VW diesels had timing belts, except 2.5 5 cylinder diesels and 5.0 V10 diesels which have gear train driven camshafts rather than belts or chains. I think you need to go to another garage for engine advice. See HJ reference here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/chain-cam/

This will be the chain that drives the oil pump.

VW modified their old PD engine which originally used a chain to drive the oil pump.

VW added ballancer shafts & ran this off the oil pump drive chain, then they bolted on the oil pump on the end of one of the ballancer shafts via a spline conexion.

The ballancer shafts set up an oscillation in the chain at certain revs which destroys the chain drive & the spline conexion to the oil pump. Whichever one fails first stops the oil supply. A great design.

VW then came up with a replacement gear drive which cures the problem but costs about £1k. But of course you generally have a wrecked engine by then.
