It's all gone pear shaped - now what - veryoldbear

So daughter has had a car accident and is making a good recovery, but her little car is a write off. It's now sitting in a yard somewhere, clocking up storage fees. I rang up the insurance company over a week ago, they took details, and said no problem, we will send you a letter. I expect they will want the V5 and MOT etc etc. Tax disc retrieved from dead car. To get a refund I need the V5 to send to South Wales, so can't send it to insurance company. What am I supposed to do? Mrs Bear is nagging me and complaining I haven't done anything, but I am stuck ...

You do not need the V5

How to apply for a refund

You can apply for a refund of vehicle tax with a tax disc, or without one if it has been lost or stolen.

Application with a tax disc

To apply for your refund, fill in and download the form V14 ‘Application for a refund of vehicle tax when you have the tax disc’. Once you have filled in the form online you should:

  • print and sign your form
  • attach your tax disc
  • post to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AL

There is an online step by step guide available to help you with this
