Where is the Chinese invasion? - daveyK_UK

Back in April, the importers of Daihatsu announced they would be replacing the brand with Great Wall cars. They made a big song and dance about a pick up and a small city car. Does anyone know if they still have plans to come to the UK? Also, are Geely still planning on coming to the UK?

Just noticed this.

Yes, I was wondering about this recently.

Everything we have is made in China. The best value goods come from there. Entire supermarkets and and DIY outlets are stocked from there.

Global economics have made China very succesful..

Where are our Chinese Cars?

I can only imagine EU import tariffs or similar artificial barriers are keeping them out, in order to protect BMW and Fiat; the French, and American and Japanese concerns who have set up assembly plants in Europe.

Not much joy for us then

When your home car market is expanding 10% plus pa, you have a problem keeping up with demand let alone exporting..

China holds much of the USA debt. Europe is busy trying to get them to increase their holding in European debt, but there will be some tough negotiating ahead to open Europe's markets for China.

Oh really? You mean the cheapest, don't you?

Would you drive a car called a 'Great Wall'?

As pointed out in a very comedic way on Top Gear a couple of years ago, communists have never made a good car. If anyone hasnt seen it i recommend you YouTube it, just for the laugh of JC and May driving round in old Eastern Bloc cars.

But on a serious note do we need more low rent Asian cars here? Kia's and Hyundai's are perfectly cheap and if the Chinese were to be significantly less i doubt it'd come without major compromises on quality. Any cars which are as good would probably cost the same as a good car, negating the only reason to buy Chinese. And if you think BMW, Mercedes, VW Group etc need protecting from Chinese snotboxes you're very mistaken. When the cheap Korean rubbish first hit the UK at rock bottom prices they may have sold well but the Germans werent panicking, and they wont this time either.

"[Changan] was the only Chinese concern represented at the [Frankfurt] show – but its appearance does not signal a full-on assault on the European market. Vice director of marketing Tan Behong explained: “We are considering Europe, but have no concrete plans as yet. We want to use this show to get an impression of what the reaction will be.”

they are selling Chinese cars in South America - 2 years ago I saw quite a few in Chile - Some were wholly new designs including large saloons and some were the copy types eg a Rav4 lookilike. Certainly alot of commercial vehicles too eg pick ups and vans.close up they looked remarkably normal looking - good paint, good shut lines, not hideous looking.

I think it's mainly the safety NCAP test that's keeping them out...if they crack that then I give them about 12 mths before something appears.

All the German car manufacturers have factories in China and cannot make enough cars the chinese apparently love them, the indigenous Chinese models are bought before they are made by the local population a massive waiting list they do not need to export.

They are very good at opening factories like the MG plant in the UK to test the waters and do their research they cannot sell homemade cars like the Frontera copy as they tried in Germany a couple of years ago the Europeans have a little more sense - I think .
