We've done a thread like this before and out of it came my purchase of a Jaguar to satisfy that 7 year old boy inside of me who looked at pictures of the XJ and said 'one day i'll have a big Jag' its not an XJ but it'll do!

So does anybody have any plans to change car soon? Is Bobbin still looking to frighten Preston with a fast Nissan?

You didn't buy an ugly S-Type did you? I hope not. Dynamically good and the underpinnings of the XF but not an S-Type!

What will your next car be? - RT

Whilst there are a number of "single-purpose" cars I'd buy if funds were unlimited, I've given up thinking too far in advance of a car purchase because manufacturers always want to move models from one market sector to another. Unlike many contributors my cars need to be acceptable at everything rather than brilliant at one thing.

Going back, Vauxhall did this to me twice - the Cavalier 3 did "what it said on the tin" very well but the Vectra-B had no merits at all although the Vectra-C was back to form - the Astra-G was a major step up from previous Astra's but progress halted after that.

My 2006 Subaru Outback had two weaknesses, cramped interior and poor fuel consumption, but all good apart from that - so what do they do with the current model, they make it bigger, that's fine, but ruin the handling and still don't make a diesel automatic.

My 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe has all I need now (times change), it's a spacious 7-seater that has good handling and fuel consumption for a 2 tonne car - but by all accounts the ix45 replacement will be smaller and less ground clearance so I've no idea what to eventually replace it with, not a Kia Sorento with too much bling and still got the wallowy handling that the Hyundai got rid of in 2009-2010.

Most of my cars have been at the value end of the market when new, that's a big plus point, but it's not a limiting factor - when Jaguar start building the SUV at Castle Bromwich on the lightweight platform I'll give it good consideration even if it has a green oval badge on!

I was looking at the new Sportage on Sunday. But in the spec I wanted it's 27K which I feel is a heck of a lot for a Kia. The Qashqai by comparison just didn't seem to be quite as good but was just as pricey.

Plus I'm concerned about the DPF and DMF issues. I think I'll just run my Xtrail into the ground instead. Running it on LPG I get the equivalent of 40mpg it's just that I bitterly resent the annual rape via the VED. I was hoping to save a bit of cash. Not going to happen.

Build quality has gone up considerably on Hyundai Kia Group models but the Kia models do seem to be priced higher, particularly considering the 4wd models are built on Hyundai platforms, ix35 in the case of Sportage.

For £1,130 less than the Sportage KX-3 4wd you could get the bigger Hyundai Santa Fe Premium but you would need to add £515 for the sat nav which the Santa Fe doesn't get as standard.

DMF isn't a problem on automatics and DPF isn't a problem as long as you ensure dealers use the correct engine oil grade.

funnily enough I'll be getting a replacement on saturday 17th. my volvo is coming up to 12 years old with 104k and now has a porus alloy wheel, a weeping driveshaft seal, and interesting noises from the clutch when cold and a new clunk from the front suspension....the cars worth £500 and is not therefore worth spending any more cash on....we've had it 8 years and my boys have grown up with the car (there 5+8) and the cars been amazing, its still on its orignal exhaust/alternator etc etc...with just basic local garage servcing its been the best car i've owned. (2litre V40 year 2000) family holiday, moving house, filled with bathroom tiles etc etc.

.

anyway the replacement,,,,,ummm and errr'd for months....yes really.....

owned french stuff in the past, so electrical and water leaks puts me off owning another.....and local ford dealer sold me a mondeo with an outstanding brake recall....left me with stuck on rear brakes on the motorway....interesting....

thought about a C30 but the early ones suffered from loads of recalls and electrical issues before sorting them about 18months later,,,so out of my 7k budget...

so what did i look at for 7k.....thought about another impreza non-turbo as we had one before....(a 2003 model) but where quite expensive for the age.....

this is something different from the normal focus/mazda/astra......

i'm picking up a 2008 Mitsubish Lancer 1.8 GS3 petrol saloon. (grp 8 insurance 36mpg average) with 28,000miles on the clock .

Our other car another v40 but with only 39k will become the main hack and mine will be for work and less heavy duties. I drive about 15k per year ....thought about the diesel (the lancer uses the 140hp vw engine but thoughts of long term issues put me off.....) the lancer is quite bland inside, but comes with cruise control etc etc. hopefully bland means reliable if my old volvo is anything to go by hahaha

paul......(will miss the old volvo. its been an amazing workhorse, its even been hit in the rear twice whilst stationary at traffic lights with no damage to our car...the lancer has a 5 start safety record and even airbags in front the drivers knees...if its half as good as the volvo i'll be very pleased...

77K miles though.

I am planning on either a RR Sport or Merc ML. Probably the ML as a 3.0 TDV6 RR Sport is a little pricey. I've not taken the plunge yet as I'm till a little worried everyone will hate me for owning a 4x4 and I'll be kicked out of Greenpeace ...

I went pn a journey in one of those Mitsubishi Lancer a while back; lent to us for work travel to a site. It was so quiet at low speeds that the driver didn't know he had stalled at one stage.

I will not frighten people!!! How very dare you! :-P

I have a short-list for my next car; suffice it to say in about 9-12 months I will certainly be on the lookout for a MX-5, but I do like the Hyundai Coupè's attributes (on paper; gotta test one yet), and yes, I like that Nissan 350Z but the sensible part of my brain says no to that or a TT. Mr B and I also should have an Audi A6 estate in place of the Celica as well, by that stage.

If the Range Rover does for my 4x4 lust for a while, I fancy a Citroën C6 next. I was looking at getting a Rover 75 before they get too old but I've decided I just like the C6 too much. Still a couple of years off needing another car hopefully - unless this one turns out to be a disaster. 6K miles so far and not a single problem - amazed? Me too.

Been asking myself that question since I moved the wretched Yeti on back in May. Since then I've been using various things we have in the company, currently a 58 Jazz that really ought to be sold but I quite like it...... even though it's not what my customers seem to expect.

My head says a new BMW 5-series Touring, my heart says another Subaru Legacy Tourer (but no local dealer so I would break my golden rule).

Reality, don't really know but need to sort soon as company year end is coming up and I'd like to do it this year.

What will your next car be? - Avant

Buster, what about a Volvo XC60?

You were unlucky with your Yeti, whereas my experiences with VAG have been uniformly excellent (two Golf estates, an Audy A4 Avant and most recently two Octavia vRS estates).

With the current one only six months old, I'm not looking for a 'next car' just yet. When this one is in its third year I'll be 65 and will see what I can afford.

What will your next car be? - Buster Cambelt

I have test driven an XC60 and was totally underwhelmed, especially by the lack of refinement from the ancient D5 engine. I am not in the market for another bloated crossover this time anyway. That was a mistake!

To be honest I have had a real mixed bag of VAG products over the years from a fantastic A6 petrol to the hopeless Skoda and a useless A4 diesel in Spain. We are now rid of all VAG cars in the company and I'm not changing the policy.

And I don't agree that I was unlucky with the Yeti, I know of one other ex-owner who had a worse expereince than I did. I refrained from joining the recent 'lemon' thread but 'over hyped by the motoring press and incapable of gettiong within 30% of published fuel figures' sounds a lot like a Yeti to me.

Sorry, this time it's going to have to be a "quality" brand (whatever that means) and customer service is (as ever) high on my agenda. In Britain we seem obsessed with 'cheap' and not with 'good' (end of rant).

What will your next car be? - Buster Cambelt

Storming to the top of the list comes the MB E-Class Estate. Unbelievably good with the 206 bhp petrol six cylinder. I'd like to try a 191bhp diesel six too but I fear I am smitten already.

It felt like a proper Merc, like they used to be.

What will your next car be? - balleballe

I intend to stick to the japs - currently a mazda 6 owner. Was thinking about another '6' but i'm leaning towards the accord with their excellent diesel engine. Got a while to go yet though in my current car which i'm keeping till it dies.

What will your next car be? - Avant

If it's a Mazda 6 diesel, it may 'die' sooner than you think. If it's a petrol it could go on forever.

Yes i did buy an S-Type. Black. 3litre petrol. Thoroughly British (except all the components which arent).

I agree Avant, from what i know, buying a diesel Mazda currently takes a bit of a leap of faith. Bizarre as Ford owned Mazda throughout this (and Volvo) and neither of them had the problems Mazda did with diesels, i mean, how can the worlds (i think) third biggest car maker make such a mess of it?!

I like the XC90, fantastic car. Owner report its pretty drab to drive but it does its job and cheaply too. Due to its price at launch it was so popular Volvo ran out of them having not anticipated the level of interest in it.

What colour?
What will your next car be? - jamie745

Posted this in another thread but it really belongs here.

Im not totally sure what im going to have next, i bought the Jag knowing in a few years time with fuel prices etc it simply wouldnt be possible, especially if i change jobs and work further away. I'll sell it after its re-tax and re-MOT at the end of next summer and seeing as i got a good deal on it i aim to sell it for what i paid for it. The 406, one of my favourite cars ever made (except for the engine braking which is annoying on an automatic) is currently SORN-ed in a mates garage, its a snow warrior so if forecasts are right and we get a blizzard i can tax it up and use it but that will probably go next year as well, part ex-ed against something else.

That'll be money in the bank and a choice to make, invest in an eco box (location of employment will affect this decision) or bank the money, buy something cheap and luxurious, maybe a Rover 75 or something and have another few years luxury motoring.

Next car? Great Topic! Automatic gearbox (medical reasons). I like saloons but need more space. Can't get on with Estates, crossovers, 4x4s, so need a large Hatchback.
Very probably diesel, as I do 18-20k per year, but I'll do the maths when the time comes.
Also it will be a new car, because I am insane.

Hopefully, Mazda will be offering Autos on their diesel Mazda 6 by then. Love the Mazda 6.
Other contenders will be Mondeo, Octavia, A5 Sportback (current car).

Apparently BMW will be making a hatchback variant of the next 3-series, but it's not in the running. No more Beemers for me.

I generally like Vauxhalls, but not the Insignia. I think that French & Italian cars are just as good as anyone else's - just nver been keen on them.

If the Koreans made a large hatchback I'd give it serious consideration as well. I like Koreans.

You know you are allowed to like automatics, it doesnt have to be purely medical. Alot of the purists will disagree. Im not keen on estates either, the only crossover i even sort of like is the 3008. The new Mondeo is massive, even i could roll around in the boot.

What about, and i cant believe im about to say this....Toyota Prius? Big, automatic, economy can match or better that of an automatic diesel of that size.

I guess because I am a 'member' of this forum and have been for years I have to admit to being a car enthusiast. Funny though, how your priorities change as your circumstances alter. Add in the fact that car purchases are made from net income and one's mind does get concentrated. The Berlingo was a 'risk' purchase but one made because it was pretty much the only car that ticked our boxes at a sensible price. The next purchase (to get back on thread) will be again practical and will, as ever, attempt to square the circle. What I really fancy. What we need. What we can afford. What our experiences of various brands are.

This sort of reduces it to Toyota, Mazda or Honda. Is there a common factor here?

What will your next car be? - Avant

You used to be a fan of the Berlingo, MLJ: given that Citroen isn't on the shortlist in your last line, have you gone off it?

I've never tried one, but it's always seemed to me like a car that suits a particular set of priorities, and suits them well. Steve Cropley of Autocar, who knowa sa thing or two about cars, has had one as a family hack for some time.

For some reason it always makes me think of the 1940s Jowett Bradford.

What will your next car be? - jamie745

Friend of mine had a Berlingo as a disabled vehicle but has now switched to the Renault Kangoo and has found that slightly better.

What will your next car be? - mlj

The Berlingo has proved to be a vehicle that has performed way beyond my expectation. It is extremely comfortable. This is an aspect I hadn't really anticipated. Driving to Italy this summer underlined this. A frought saturday trying to arrive in Nice at a certain time was frustrated by traffic. Eventually we got there. It took me 10 hours. I got out pain free. I had no idea how suited the berlingo is to long distance travel. Next change of car will address different criteria. Hence the Toyota /Honda thinking. I don't need another Berlingo. I will need a reliable car for two/ three people.

What will your next car be? - jamie745

Im surprised nobodies laughed at my assertion that i might consider a Rover 75 next year. I was waiting for a thorough shooting down on that one!

What will your next car be? - Avant

It'll go with your trilby hat.

What will your next car be? - jamie745

It'll go with your trilby hat.

Ok i suppose i was asking for that.

My thinking is that when both the Jag and Pug are gone, thats money in the bank and if i could get hold of a cheap luxury car like that then thats a few years luxury motoring right there. Petrol V6 75's automatics even with low mileage and FSH in superb condition are going for less than 2k. I'd have to consult with some of the Rover experts on here though before hand as im fully aware the petrol engines (the 1.8 in particular which i wouldnt buy anyway) are not the finest ever made. The BMW diesel engine is probably the best put together but the downside of buying a diesel is you then end up with a diesel.

What will your next car be? - Avant

Assuming that you'd want the 2.5 V6 engine in a 75, I can't see what that would do that your current S-type can't. With more XFs coming on to th used market, you wouldn't get much for the Jag anyway. Surely better to keep it long-term and if you want to 'keep it for best' get a cheap runaround to complement it.

What will your next car be? - jamie745

I could get back what i paid for the S-Type if i sell it early enough, probably August next year as its due for MOT in June and tax at the end of July. Ive already had someone offer me £500 more than i paid for the car (you know what chairman type people are like, money growing on trees etc) and theres always an idiot with more money than brain out there if you have the patience to find them. The plan all along was to have it for a year while it was still possible, satisfy the childhood dream of owning a big Jag and get rid before it turns into a white elephant. Getting the Sat Nav fixed would improve my chances however.

There are still people like myself who dont like the XF and would prefer an impeccably maintained S-Type over it. But going back to the 75, the 2.0 V6 would be adequate but im thinking more of when a time comes when i need an economical car. Perhaps buying a CDTi Rover 75 instead would combine economy with luxury motoring and cover me either way but it'd have to be a manual as automatic diesels drive me up the wall. The point is a 75 cant get any cheaper, they're rock bottom now with scarcity of certain parts obviously now an issue.

What will your next car be? - knighterd
There are solace grouping similar myself who dont like the XF and would raise an impeccably preserved S-Type over it. Funny Paul, thats just wonderful. But its thinking like that which keeps these cars so cheap and such a terrific bargain. Diesel or petrol? That is the question. Are diesel engines really more difficult, more problems with injection? A Megane? A Toyota Terra? Something for 2 people, good in bad weather, snow, ice etc. Preferably with fewer problems than the VW Tiguan. Suggestions?

Hello there. Thats a hard question to answer as its so broad but on the whole alot of modern diesels (last 5 years or so) have had problems with the DPF's and can be costly if they go wrong. Typically you'll pay extra to buy a diesel model so you need to weigh up whether your mileage will offset the extra cost in fuel savings, for alot of people it often doesnt. Some may prefer the responsiveness of a petrol, others may like the low down grunt and pull of a diesel. I dont know what your budget is but i'd steer clear of Megane's personally, fantastic safety ratings but ropey everywhere else. I had a Peugeot 406 which took on many miles in many feet of snow and won without a problem but as a standard rule a front wheel drive car is a better option than RWD, but obviously 4WD is best.

If you let us know what your budget is im sure you'll get some suggestions.
