BMW 3 Series - Which BMW to buy?? - flossie81

Hi,

I'm in a dilema and would really appreciate some knowledgable help.

We are buying an estate for the 1st time and the only one we really like is a bmw. The 318 seems to suit our needs.

We have been to see one which is a 54 plate (old shape) with 81,000. FSH and one owner for £4999

We have also seen a 07 plate (so new shape) with 115,000 for £5600. Ex-lease and with fsh.

Both cars will come with a new 12 month MOT, 3 month warranty and both are petrol

I do about 13,000 miles a year.

We really like the new shape and it's obviously a newer car but is much higher mileage. The other car was also nice but our heart is set on the new shape but my brain isn't sure this is the best one to go for.

I need your advice - which one would you go for? Is the high mileage likely to be problematic?

Thanks for any advice!

The later one is cheap enough, but it's well over a hundred thousand miles, which isn't starship mileage but in 3 years when it's got 150k it will be getting into banger territory. Selling it on then will be painful.

The older one sounds OK but isn't particularly c heap when you compare with this one....ebay classified no..230667951942

They are good cars but spec matters a lot, SE comes well equipped, far better than ES.

Is there any particular reason you want petrol, cos the 2 litre Diesel is a lovely engine and unless you thrash the living daylights out of it will give 45+ mpg.

Thanks for replying.

Not really bothered about what engine to be honest, it was just the petrol ones within budget!

We did realise the newer one will be worth squat after we're done with it - we'd like to keep it for 4/5 years but I wasn't sure if the older one would also be worth squat? As there's very little in price between the two it's making it so difficult to decide! If the newer one was a couple of thousand more we wouldn't even consider it but it's just seems such a tempting price!

That older 3 series that you are looking at looks expensive compared to this one

Thanks for the links - unfortunately I'm in Cornwall and the prices for used cars here seem a bit higher than elsewhere - not sure why really?

GB gives excellent advice about the diesel option. Best 2 litre diesel on the market IMHO. The one weakness is the alarming number of turbo failures (which are expensive) - however if the turbo has already been replaced then you are laughing. You'll recoup the extra cost of the diesel over the petrol car easily, if you keep to your plan of keeping it for 4/5 years.

If you don't mind me asking, why only the BMW option for an estate? There are some really excellent estate cars out there, and the BMW is a bit small for an estate and a little bit flawed as a load carrier to be honest. (Voice of experience here :-) )

To be honest it's a looks thing (which is very shallow I know!)

Basically we didn't really want an estate but need one (2 dogs and a baby) and so I thought if I have to have an estate I want a pretty one! We did look at a few others - a vectra estate, and a ford focus one but whilst they were fine they just weren't as nice looking!

Audi A4, Volvo V50, Saab sportwagon. Other good looking estates.

We did like the A4 but they seemed even more expensive than the BMW's - at least they were round here? I'll have a look at the other ones you suggested

BMW's will easily take the mileage if serviced correctly but as GB says it depends how concerned you are with selling it on at high mileage for peanuts. I bought my E36 shape at 114000 miles and six years later sold at 158000 miles knowing I wouldn't get much for it. But the car was running beautifully.

The drivetrains are extremely strong but at high miles you'll have to expect to start replacing suspension bushes, shocks e.t.c.

To get a decent low mileage car with FSH you need a good budget unfortunately.

Seemingly not...

Hi

I would recommend the E91 over the E46. The newer model is more spacious and practical if you plan to use the rear seats and boot. The older car suffers from intrusive wheel arches and more limited rear passenger space.

My 320i does around 34 mpg so expect a bit more with the 318i. The only thing to watch is the regularity that you will need to replace runflat tyres. My rears last 15,000 and fronts 30,000. Replacements are typically £130 each for Continentals.

My 320i (57 E92) managed to need all of its injectors replacing at around 35k miles. FOC when under warranty but a lot of money if not.

If you can stretch to an Efficient Dynamics version you may benefit from my cheaper VED. Mine is only 151g/km for is £165 a year. The 318i should be less.

Phil

Thanks everyone for the input.

So is the general concencus to steer clear of the high mileage one?

I've just bought an 07 318d touring privately (saw it on Pistonheads). Paid rather more for it than you are looking to spend I think, but would recommend it wholeheartedly - even though it's still early days!

For what it's worth, I went for a diesel not only for the fuel economy but as much because they seem to be more popular and I hope that will make it easier to sell on, if and when the time comes.

Theres nothing particularly 'wrong' with buying a high mileage car but in three years with over 150k on it as mentioned above it will be difficult to sell on. Of course you could trade it in against something else but dont expect a particularly favourable deal.

As an estate the 3 series isnt the best in its class by any means, its a bit too small and too narrow to be a 'proper' estate car. Even the Jaguar X-Type estate is a more versatile load lugger and ive seen 7 year old diesel X-Type estates with under 100k on them for 5-6 grand. The BMW diesels as mentioned earlier are a good bet, good economy and even with high mileage will sell on reasonably easily. On a budget you need to be careful with things like BMW as they do hold their price very well, even 10 year old petrol 5 series with 100k+ arent banger prices. Even if it is a styling or looks issue i'd recommend shopping around a bit more as i feel you can get more for your money on a car with a rubbish badge.
