Daewoo Matiz 800cc 2001 - Daewoo Matiz no power!? Engine check flashing - Kirsty240287

Car's been loosing power for a while but seems to correct itself, went really bad back in march so had someone to change the spak plugs for me, hey presto all was fine. I don't know if this bits relevant but my exhaust had come away from the back box so a family friend welded it back on, however as soon as I drove it the engine management light started flashing and it had no power.

Took to local garage but they couldn't get a computer reading. They said it would most lightly be the coil pack or the head gasket. They suggested changing the plugs, leads and coil pack and a cost of £200!! And they also said they'd carry out a compression test to rule out it being the head gasket. Simply don't have the money to get it done, so I changed the leads but still no joy, is my next step to buy a used coil pack and try that or should I go down a diff avenue (i don't want to waste money i haven't got) My brother who sadly lives in austrailia so isn't here to help, said the spark plugs should be fine as they were only changed in march and to check the oil tank for 'mayo' which indicates it being the head gasket, I've done this and it looks fine.

Having read another post regarding 'wet sparks' how do I carry this check out, presumably it isn't a good idea to drive the car when it's in this state!?

Any help would be great thanks, and keep it simple as I have very little car knowledge!

Did your friend use gas or an electric arc welder. If the latter he may have fried some of the cars electrics if he didn't earth the parts being welded properly.

As the CEL light is up there should be fault codes stored.

Suggest you take the car to a garage or diagnostics specialist who can read the codes, otherwise you will be fishing in the dark.

Are you suggesing that the fault was solid immediately after the welding Job. If this was an arc welder and the garage can not read the ECU I would have to question if the battery was disconnected and the leads shorted together when the welding was done. Regards Peter

Thanks for getting back to me, it was an electric welder he used. He took the exhaust off the car to weld and then attached it back on?

" He took the exhaust off the car to weld and then attached it back on? "

That won't be part of the problem then unless he has managed to partly block the exhaust during the welding process.

You need to get the fault codes read by someone with the correct kit .

Some cars have the Lambda sensor in the front of the expansion bex. If this is the case did he reconnect it. Regards Peter

I'm not sure, like I say, I know nothing about cars (I'm going to play the I'm just a woman card here) how would I check? It had been loosing power on and off for a while but has been really bad since he welded the exhaust. I would have taken it to a garage to be welded but he offered to do it for free

Ask the guy who welded the exhaust and let him check it. Regards Peter
