what is the letter of the law as regards moving off at a zebra crossing , when the peds still have say , two strides to reach pavement

I believe the advice is to rev your engine in order to make the pedestrian aware of your impatience.

Honestly! Do you need to ask? You must wait until they have left the zebra crossing before proceding.

i know you can be fined for not stopping to allow them to go on to crossing. but didnt read in highway code that you MUST wait for them to be completey clear beore moving off

The Zebra, Pelican and Puffin Pedestrian Crossings Regulations and General Directions 1997

.Precedence of pedestrians over vehicles at Zebra crossings25.—

(1) Every pedestrian, if he is on the carriageway within the limits of a Zebra crossing, which is not for the time being controlled by a constable in uniform or traffic warden, before any part of a vehicle has entered those limits, shall have precedence within those limits over that vehicle and the driver of the vehicle shall accord such precedence to any such pedestrian.

(2) Where there is a refuge for pedestrians or central reservation on a Zebra crossing, the parts of the crossing situated on each side of the refuge for pedestrians or central reservation shall, for the purposes of this regulation, be treated as separate crossings.

What clumsy wording.

what does "...accord such precedence to any such pedestrian" mean? Obviously they have right of way, but does moving off after they have passed your vehicle infringe upon this?

Since the inconvenience is in stopping, waiting a extra coupe of seconds whilst stopped makes little difference, so I assume that the law requires the driver to remain stopped until tthe pedestrian has left the zebra crossing.

I think in these tough economic times its better to not bother stopping as braking wastes fuel. Or we could start billing pedestrians for wasted petrol. There you go government, put the fuel tax down or we will start driving over people.

:)

Quite. Zebra crossings should be replaced by puffin crossings which require the insertion of 50p to operate. The money is then collected and sent to the treasury where the aggregate sum is deducted from fuel duty! It's a greenmeasure, who can argue with it? ;)

what does precedence mean , order of rank, give priority to. allow to go first. well ive done that now i want to go.

Thanks for that, Doc. The wording is clumsy but clear enough: accord precedence = give way (i.e. stop) and within the limits means while the pedestrian is on the road as opposed to the pavement or island.

I'm sure Unthrottled is right to imply that you should wait another two seconds if you're in a coupe. :)

I find that if I go past pedestrians close enough when they are still on the crossing, the vortex from the car will cause them to spin round uncontrollably in a kind of Tom-and-Jerry effect
