Hi sbh, whilst having sympathy for your uncle, having a parent in his eighties myself, someone (& I'm not suggesting it is you) needs to take responsibility for this sort of thing for him.
My dad is by no means senile but he gets confused very easily these days. For example for the past two years he managed to purchase AA membership four times. Fortunately I was able to speak to someone at the AA who cancelled & refunded the duplications.
The problem isn't the fault of the insurance companies (imagine if he had failed to renew & had a serious accident?) but the situation you, I & many more others have to deal with in having elderly reletives
I would speak to insurance co & explain that your uncle was not aware when he bought the policy that it was an automatic renewal & that at 87 he could hardly be expected to realise this unless it was brought explicitly to his attention rather than being simply contained in the terms & conditions. I would hope they would be sympathetic but if they are not then go though their complaints procedure citing the phrase "Treating Customers Fairly"
