Hi mike. This is a somewhat common issue on these and has been covered before on these forums, search for the issue in the search field and im sure you'll find it. The VSS itself on a mk2 i think is around £40 and could probably get any independant to fit it without too much fuss.
From under the car, follow the gearbox dipstick/filler tube into the gearbox and its next to that. Single bolt fixing. (At least on the variant that I have).
