Vauxhall Vectra B Diesel 2.0 Dti - fuel supply problem/ oil pump - welchy_100

I have a 2000 X Vauxhall Vectra 2.0 Dti, which I inherited from my Grandfather. It has only done 57,000 miles. It has an intermittent fuel supply problem, which two different garages have put on their diagnostic systems and diagnosed as an oil pump needing replacement, and that as this is integral to other parts of the engine and its management, the cost is £2000 for parts and £500 for labour. They have said the complexity of the system means no exchange parts are available nor second-hand.

Does this sound true? Do you know of any dealer who might repair Vauxhall oil pumps?

P.S. I have tried giving the vehicle a good thrash and it has had a thorough service. The problem is getting worse.

The problem shows in two ways. Firstly when starting the car almost fires immediately on the first turn of the ignition, but does not catch. It will do this 10/20 times, then after some foot pumping of the accelerator, will eventually catch.

Secondly whilst driving the engine will suddenly loose power, catch, loose power, catch, loose power. On Saturday, it did this over a period of three miles on a motorway as exit road before stopping at a set of traffic lights. We pushed it to safety, returned eight hours later, it started first time, drove for ten miles, and then the same problem occurred. It stopped a mile from home. I left it for two hours and it started first time, and we made it safely back.

Confused. Do you have an oil pump problem Or a diesel injector pump problem. I assume it is the injector pump. I suggest you take the car to a diesel independant specialist and gaet a decent diagnosis of the proplem. Regards Peter

Me too ... I don't know this engine but if its not common rail it sounds like air ingress.

Two well known problems here. Firstly it's not uncommon for fuel to drain back to the tank overnight, meaning that you have to crank the engine for 20 or 30 seconds before it will start. This is because the fuel pump has to pull fuel up from the tank, through the filter and prime itself before it will start. This can be confirmed with the use of a fuel hand primer connected inline, and by slackening the fuel inlet union on the injction pump body and pumping until all the air has been drawn out. When you re-tighten the union the engine will start straight away.

The other is a pump ECU fault. When this occurs the engine cannot usually be started no matter what you do. This is a job for a diesel specialist.....

Oops, forgot to say that if it is fuel draining back it's usually due to air entering the fuel system through the fuel leak-off pipes, or occasionally a faulty injector seal. The former are not difficult to change, but the latter is quite a bit more of a job.....
