Who is it that likes the Renault Vel Satis?!

I found one: www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/20112940338...p

Very low mileage.

I like the Vel Satis...but have no use for one right now.

Would love one, just can't justify turning the spouse and offspring out onto the streets at the moment :(

That emplies there will come a time when you could justify doing that :P

The Vel Saris is a very smart looking vehicle. Shame it never caught on. It seems that anything French, above family saloon size is just a helter skelter of depreciation. However if you fancy one and are prepared to run it until it drops(you are unlikely to sell it again) then I suppose bargains are to be had, so go for it. A bit of what you fancy does you good, and one in the eye for the 'badge' snobs. Cheers Concrete

I wouldn't actually buy one, but if you want a really eccentric Renault I always preferred the Vel Satis's mad brother which was released about the same time - the Avantime

I ran a Vel Satis 2.2 diesel initiale believe me its only a laguna with a part plastic body it still has all the problems that most Renaults suffered and probably still do

I think most of the well-known problems with Renaults were with (a) diesel engines and sundry electrics and (b) cars built between approx. 2000 and 2006. They've been better recently from what I read.

I had 7 company Renaults in a row between 1980 and 2001 (a 20TS, two 18GTX estates, a 21 Savanna, an Espace, a Safrane and a Laguna V6) - all petrol, and all very reliable despite doing 30,000 miles a year. When I went to a new job in 2002 with more salary bu no car I had to stop having Renaults becauase other people's problems led to the massive depreciation that we all know about.

The one that Bobbin's seen is from a reputable Renault dealer and sounds like a lot of car for the money, but could still go massively wrong as it gets older.

I had a read of the HJ review. It says it's 'curiously-uncarlike' to drive. So is it like driving a boat or something instead..? It also says it makes more sense than the Avantime but doesn't say why. Also a very safe vehicle. It's certainly unusual looking.

Its exactly like driving a renault laguna except you are higher of the ground believe me they are a nightmare to own.

I was thinking pedalo!

Pedalos - 'No. 99, come in: your time is up'........No. 66, are you in trouble?'

Sorry, that should have been in the bad joke thread. I suppose what HJ meant is that the driving position was MPV-like as he says further up. The Avantime was the same length as the Vel Satis but had only 2 (huge) side doors. I don't think anyone ever got the point of the Avantime: it seemed like quirkiness for quirkiness's sake.

You didn't by chance work for Alcatel at the time ? They forced UK employees to have French cars only in this period, until a mass rebellion allowed some 'dare I say' German cars onto the fleet list.
