It might make a difference, yes. The Renault 1.4 of that vintage used a distributer and single point injection, the 1.6 used semi sequental injection and ignition. You need to be confident about the parts you're bolting on. Haynes manuals are cheap secondhand....
When you say fuel is 'coming through' do you mean fuel is being injected into the cylinders or merely that the fuel is going to the injectors? If you have neither fuel nor spark then in all probability there's no signal coming from the ECU.
