Windscreen + Glass - Enhanced Driving Visibility - JOGON

Some wag once wrote in HJ section of Telegraph suggesting toothpaste to clean windscreens and I was dumb enough to try it (not with a toothbrush though). HJ's slot has over the years repeated tips for car body wash+wax and favoured (best?) brand, but little or on the most important bit - the windscreen. Household windowlene and green spray glass cleaner cleared the dirt and film inside and out but didn't last or water-repel. Tried Halfords various 'glass cleaners' and then 'glass treatments'. This worked. But applying a rain repellent/treatment is a bit of a faff, espec after cleaning car and glass, or just glass. The Holy Grail is now achieved and a few of the major players now have an easy to use, spray on Glass 'Cleaner + Rain Repellent'. And no, this isn't a marketing slot. Probably all made in same factory but Turtlewax Ice 2in1 is good. But my fave for ease of use is RainX 2in1. Now I wouldn't suggest this on public roads, so a disused airfield is ok, but at speeds of 35/40mph+ rain just beads away leaving clear visibility, you almost don't need wipers. Works on all front, side, rear glass and mirrors. Any hints or tips welcomed. These are about £7 bottle but last ages.

I tried this and didn't like it.
When I did have to use the wipers, the water was spread into a fine, dense bead film giving the impression of exterior condensation/misting. During the day this was tolerable, but at night, in the face of oncoming headlights I found it particularly poor, reducing visibility and clarity markedly.
It is very resilient too, couldn't shift it so had to let it wear off.

I've found cheap toothpaste to work fine - got to be traditional type though the gel is a waste of space. Autoglym car glass polish works well as does the Mer equivalent. THe problem is usually caused by the wax in wash and wax products adhering to the window - if you can get any panel wipes are good at shifting this. Remember to clean the wiper blades too.

Agree thar RainX and similar can be as much a hinderance as help

That's a good point-it's not the water, it's the smearing that's the problem. Might be good on the back window, but not the windscreen.

A regular rub down with a chamois, (forget waxing the alloys or polishing the metallic paint or whatever), and clean blades and you will NEVER have problems with smearing windscreens.

Or the wipers possibly? Never noticed smearing but change blades 6-12monthly. Worth wiping the blades smoothly down length pressing both sides using rainx/other on a sponge cloth. The dirt, film and/old oxidised rubber thus removed is impressive. Or maybe I need to get out a bit more, p'raps for a walk over't mo'or.youtu.be/wvKriR46ERE
