What do you think of Elon Musk? Have your say | No thanks

Dutchie has inspired me to do a 'what are you reading?' thread.

At the mo, I am reading one of Wilbur Smith's egyptian books, a biography of Stalin and a book about driving psychology.

Books - unthrottled

I thought Wilbur Smith only did swashbuckling colonial adventures? (Yes, I've read a few of them!).

Biography of Stalin sounds...heavy going.

Sir Harry Ricardo's High Speed Internbal Combustion Engine was a really interesting read. There's nothing in it that you won't find in a modern text but the context is fascinating. Oh to be in the exciting world of the early pioneers...

It is a swashbuckling colonial adventure. I've got them all! Good for switching off the mind.

You are a man bobbin! Surely no one with 2 X chromosomes could enjoy Smith's weak female characters? His novels did inspire me to buy Ian Smith's autobiography: a weighty tome that was more sour grapes than Rhodesian adventure. Managed chapter one, then got some Colin Dexter out for a bit of light relief!

Ive only ever read two books in my life. And both were very good i must say.

I remember years ago as a young lad reading Biggles great storys.Another good writer Hans Helmut Kirst German.I don't know if there are any translations in English.D.Dreux.History writer Dutch.Got me into trouble with our history teacher he wrote real history not the glamorous overhyped rubbish we got in our textbooks. For easy reading still like Alistair Mclean.

You are a man bobbin!

Thanks a b***** bunch unthrottled!!! You know I'm not a man; I like a Triumph GT6 purely because it is purple.

Some of them aren't weak. I'm not bothered if it's a decent story.

I do also enjoy Sue Grafton's books - her female protagonist is a very strong character.

Jamie - which 2 books have you read? Don't say 'Spot goes to the zoo' or something.

Books - jamie745

Of Mice and Men was one of them with Watership down being the other lol.

Not even the Haynes manual for a Scorpio? ;-)

If you dont pick on my Pug its the b***** Scorpio

A well thumbed tome!

Ok - I want book suggestions!!!

I'm going on holiday at the end of July and I need some decent books. I'm a fan of the 800 page paperback type for holidays. I'm going for 10 day so I'll have to have at least 5 books. Suggest away!!

Oh and there's this: www.amazon.com/Fast-Car-Physics-Chuck-Edmondson/dp...4

Tipler! Still miss the worthy Qur'an.

Going somewhere nice?

Books - Bobbin Threadbare

Cyprus. So really I ought to be reading Petrarch, Zeno or even some Durrell. But something with sex and drugs and rock n' roll will do.

Anything by Jilly Cooper should suit you. Much reviled but actually a good read when you're on holiday.

Or the Woman of Substance trilogy (Barbara Taylor Bradford).

A good translation of Homer's Odyssey would be good for a Mediterranean holiday.

A relative of mine has translated the Iliad and the Odyssey into regular English. They're very good. I have been to Greece quite a few times (I absolutely love Greek food)!

Barbara Taylor Bradford eh? She does at least write giant books. I will have a look.

A modern classic "theory and practice of cylinder head modification " by David Vizard...
Books - unthrottled

The trouble with Vizard is that he spins a good yarn, but a lot of his theory is complete rubbish. This doesn't stop him publishing at a voracious rate though!

Worked well enough on the crossflows I used to do, and on the head of the 16v Vauxhall my son currently runs in his (was mine) Westfield.

Re reading 'cos it is hot here at the moment and b***** Wimbledon is on!

But what was the rest of the torque curve like?!

The crossflows (like any 2 valve) can be opened up for top end flow at the expense of air velocity which hurts mid load/low RPM performance. Doubt there's many big gains to be found in a four valve, they flow pretty well as it is.

Stock heads are usually a lot better than they 'look'. Some of the restrictions are intentional, either to increase velocity, even out air flow or simply because the some part of the engine can't handle any more air flow (power).

His theory of combustion was pretty weak, and his stuff on carburettors was appalling. I read one of his articles whereby he claimed that excessive venturi velocity would atomise fuel too well, and that atomised fuel would displace air in the manifold and that this would cost power. That just isn't true!
