"Car Tax" - TTToommy

P/exd a car in February and the garage insisted I hand in my car tax disc, I P/exd my other car in March and the dealer there said that I would / should take the disc myself to get a refund - only the person on the V5 could get a refund and that had been the case since the begining of the year.

Can anyone help?

Thanx:)

All down to negotiation. The tax disc is just money waiting to be claimed, so either you get it or the dealer does.

Dealers don't usually say anything in the hope you'll leave it on so they get a nice little earner. Unless it's discussed as part of the negotiations I always take it off and get the refund myself.

One dealer played his face when I did that but readily conceded that he hadn't specified leaving it on.

If the dealer in February expected to sell the car fairly quickly, or put it in an auction, then he would benefit from an increased return. ( It will be more attractive to a private buyer at an auction with a current tax disc and the dealer may expect a better price from that sector).

As above, it's all part of the negotiation of the part exchange value.

It's just negotiation. I only got the px offer on my old Focus on the condition I left the new-ish tax disc on. Car I bought didn't have one and I had to sort it ASAP. As leaseman suggested, people buying like to see a car with 'taxed until...'.

Sorry my point was the 2nd dealer said only the person on the V5 could get money back as the rules had changed , I know dealers nearly always used to cash these things in wondered if the people at the 1st dealership were doing something croocked as when I asked the dealer principle @ the first place the sales mananger and the salesmen left that very day.

Maybe I was just thinking the worst;-)

The dealer is correct, the rules changed two or three years ago.

Only the registered keeper can reclaim the unexpired portion of a road fund licence.

I'm friendly with my local Ford dealer and they told me the change costs them a lot of money over a year.
