I would just like to express my extreme dislike at that b***** Nissan Cashcow advert that comes up on this site. The number of times it has opened Nissan's website even though I don't think I clicked on it is getting ridiculous. Scrolly-out adverts are evil and must be stopped!!!!!!!

Rant over.

Stupid adverts - bonzo dog

Agreed

Stupid adverts - unthrottled

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's getting irritated by this. nb Nissan: I don't want a cash cow or a puke, ok?

Stupid adverts - Neiltoo

They're so irritating, that I would have thought them counter productive, making me resistant to their message. So Nissan goes down the league table of brands I might look at next time.

These are even worse than the pop-unders that evade my pop up filter - so much so that the irritation outweighs the usefulness and interest of this site.

I probably won't be back, which means one fewer click through.

Stupid adverts - Dutchie
Same here fed up with these Nissan adverts irritating.Don't visit this site that often the other site is how HJ used to be.Some great caracters and knowledge somebody cocked up somewhere on here.
Stupid adverts - Bobbin Threadbare

What is this other site? May its name not be mentioned? This site is good but it's only half a forum really.

Stupid adverts - Dynamic Dave

What is this other site? May its name not be mentioned?

Correct, it cannot be mentioned as it's in the swear filter. As far as I am aware, it's the only forum that cannot be mentioned here.

Quite why HJ and his publisher see it as a threat, is anyone's guess. We're small fry compared to this site, and despite all the problems that occured here in Feb 2010, it looks like the forum has recovered from the outage and gets a high number of contributors and visitors once more.

ps, try googling "VxFan" if you want to find us.

Stupid adverts - Avant

We've been here before in a thread started by Pica - you should be able to find it. I asked our publisher about it and it seems to depend which browser you use. Maybe try an alternative.

I'm sorry we have to have adverts - but that's how trhe site is funded. I've no idea what you mean by 'half a forum' - what's the other half supposed to be?

Edited by Avant on 21/06/2011 at 22:32

Stupid adverts - Bobbin Threadbare

No, I completely understand about funding it with adverts; I have a friend who does these targeted web browsing advertising things for a living! I normally have no problem with Firefox but this Nissan one is doing my head in!

Half a forum means it's only got half the functionality I expected a forum to have; you can't post images, send people messages, tag posts or anything like that. It's not necessarily a bad thing; it keeps it clean and simple.

Stupid adverts - Avant

Fair point - but I think most motoring forums don't have these 'extras' . You can post a link (as you have with the Popemobile) which is useful, but I've a feeling that if people could send each other messages the debate might sink! We can pass anything on to another member if you E-mail us (moderators@honestjohn.co.uk). As you say, clean and simple is probably the best bet.

I'll pass on the complaints about the Nissan advert to our publisher - it's happened to me too and obscuring the actual text of forum posts is a step too far and certainly so irritating as to be counter-productive.

Stupid adverts - FP

Times were when you could look at people's profiles, which could include an e-mail address, and search the postings by topic and who posted.

I'm not sure why this kind of functionality disappeared, but it was part of the change of website software, so someone made a conscious decision .

Stupid adverts - Dynamic Dave

It was more to do with the new web developer not being able to mimic the bespoke forum when this place had a facelift. Rather than just buying off the shelf forum software, he tried to copy what was already in place, and by the looks of it still hasn't got it right.

I, and the other mods at the time lost patience with the never ending mistakes and errors and decided enough was enough and resigned our role here.

With regard to the ads, to tell someone that the browser they are using is the problem isn't the answer. A high percentage of people use Internet Explorer, and ALL websites should be compatable with each and every web browser on the market.

The Nissan Add is a pain in the harris ! so much so that I'm rather fed up now !

Stupid adverts - Berisford

Yes, that Nissan thing and the constant opening of other rubbish in the background is indeed becoming a nuicance.

AGREED. DO NISSAN AND HONEST JOHN PLC REALISE WHAT A P**S OFF THIS IS?

Stupid adverts - madf

I run XP with Norton Security and IE8 and have no popups and ads.

Those complaining should get a decent security system and set it and their browser up correctly. Then they will have no problems..

I have zero problems with this site and I am no PC techie..

Stupid adverts - jamie745

Why does the Nissan ad leap across the screen even when i HAVENT f***ING PUT MY CURSER OVER IT?!?!?!

*breathes in

Stupid adverts - Armitage Shanks {p}

No need to SHOUT! This has been done over so many times! Do you want adverts or to pay £x a month for access to the site?

Stupid adverts - jamie745

Adverts are fine, but ads which pop out when you dont touch them, block the entire screen, pop up every time you click a link etc is just ridiculous, it makes the site unusable, its more like HJ is paying to have a forum on an advert site, rather than the other way around.

Every other website manages ok without these ridiculous problems why cant this one?

Stupid adverts - unthrottled

If you look at the ad, there's a a set of crosshairs right over the cashcow. How much better would it be if, when you clicked n the crosshairs, the cashcow exploded? I would then no longer be irritated.

Stupid adverts - madf

Stop complaining and get some decent security software which stops all this...

Stupid adverts - jamie745

Its got nothing to do with security, or pop ups, or browsers. Its an advert. If you know of a web browser which is free which does not display ads then i'd like to see it.

Love it!!

Stupid adverts - JOGON

It is there blocking the screen. You have to scroll over it to get rid of the b***dy thing

Stupid adverts - unthrottled

Quite like the terribly animated Kia Picanto ad though. It's amateurishness appeals. Kia: if I'm ever in the market for a small East asian car, I shall consider you.

Nissan: It's no good trying to be funky with crossovers. We all still remember the Sunnys, Bluebirds, Primeras et al. Acheing dull worthy cars that cost you your independence and forced you to merge with Renault.

Stupid adverts - unthrottled

Sad News: Apparently Nissan have produced 1,000,000 cashcows-so these ads seem to be working.

Stupid adverts - Bobbin Threadbare

On a scale of 1 to Juke, how bad is the Cashcow really though?

Stupid adverts - unthrottled

Hmm. I think a solid 8-tied with the Ford Kuga (marketing wanted a tough feline name but had already run out of cats). Do you think Apple with have the same problem with OS names?

Stupid adverts - Bobbin Threadbare

I try not to think about Apple.

Stupid adverts - Avant

With a thread about crumbling alloys, and another about pi, I'd have thought apples were very much on your mind....

Why don't you want to think about Apple? Maybe you either crave an iPhone or have one and wish you didn't?

Stupid adverts - Bobbin Threadbare

Mmm apple crumble. Haven't made one of them for ages!

No, I just don't really agree with the whole Apple ethos. I have an Android-based phone instead, which I can get free apps and hack and mess with to my heart's content, unlike an Apple. I have got an iPod though, but it was a present.

Stupid adverts - unthrottled

There's a sort of halo of smugness that tends to surround apple products that is distinctly unappealing. They're nicely presented but very pricely-and completely locked down to users. I imagine this is particular annoyance to Bobbin who sounds like the sort of person who is handy with a soldering iron and made her first transister radio at the age of eight.

Stupid adverts - Bobbin Threadbare

YES!!! Gosh you know me so well.

Stupid adverts - JOGON

What is an ipod?

Stupid adverts - Bobbin Threadbare

Really..?

Ok, small music player, comes with headphones. Plug into the computer and add music tracks to it. Listen to it while running or travelling on the bus!

Stupid adverts - injection doc

Thought I would have a quick look as i havent dared for a month and thank goodness the nissan adds gone. may be I will have to get in the habit of reading again !

Stupid adverts - jamie745

Well its an unavoidable fact that the posting numbers and activity on here has nosedived horrifically since the complaints about the Nissan ads. Perhaps the powers that be have finally accepted this fact.

Stupid adverts - Dynamic Dave

Perhaps the powers that be have finally accepted this fact.

Doubt it. They never listened much to the previous mods when we made suggestions - either ourselves or on behalf of forum members who complained via email.

Stupid adverts - Avant

I complained.....it stopped. I can't tell whether those two things are connected, or it had run its course.

Has anyone else been troubled by an advert with a virus? - something about a gambling game promoted by the Sun. This seemed to repeat itself leaving the computer straining and slowing to a crawl. It seems to have gone away but let us know (moderators@honestjohn.co.uk) if it reappears.

In terms of numbers posting, the motoring section is holding up well - so well that 268 people have viewed a post of Jamie's which he started only this afternoon (assuming, as I think we can safely, that Jamie doesn't re-read his posts).

Edited by Avant on 01/08/2011 at 23:06

Stupid adverts - jamie745

How vain do you think i am?!?!

Well obviously i read it again to see replies to it, and will log each person as a seperate individual each time they click on it to read someones reply so it may say 268 views its not 268 people.

So... credit where it's due.

I said I was leaving... I didn't.

So for the last few days at least, my pop-up blocker has had nothing to do

There are no pop unders.

It's now a reasonable site to use.

Please don't change back.

Stupid adverts - HF

I still like the old whistling ad. Forgotten the tune again tho
