My car went into an independent garage to have a gearbox seal replaced. I phoned the garage yesterday and was informed that there was a problem with the car and they couldn't get it started. It was showing an error with the crank sensor. I phoned them again today to see how it was going and I have been told that they have damaged the engine and the engine will need to be replaced. It looks as though vales have been damaged.
The garage have told me that they made a mistake and caused the problem and that they are talking to their insurance company. I would like to know what rights I have?
If it does require a new engine, can I insist on a new engine rather than a reconditioned one?
Can I specify where the work is carried out?
What am I entitled to in the way of a courtesy car?
The car in question is a Land Rover discovery 3 and I need all 7 seats next weekend, I also need the load space at the moment as I am in the middle of moving house. Can I insist on a Discovery 3 or newer model 4 as a courtesy car?
At the moment the garage have only told me this over the phone, is there anything I should be doing to ensure that they don't say it was like it when I took it in etc?
I am hopeful that the garage will be very good about it and so far they have been, but I'd like to know what my rights are. Should I tell my insurance company and or AA?
Can either offer me any advice / help?
