Volkswagen Tiguan - VAG 2.0 TDI -- fanbelt and cambelt problems - craig-pd130

Hi, a question on behalf of an office colleague who has a 58-plate Tiguan 2.0 TDI with just over 15K miles up.

It's been at a local independent for 3 weeks having a problem diagnosed. The car cut out and would not restart, so was towed to the garage.

They say that diesel has leaked onto the 'fanbelt' (their words, not mine), resulting in the 'fanbelt' breaking.

They say this, in turn, has caused 'cambelt problems'.

I don't know this engine, so can anyone please tell me what the aux drive belt drives (water pump / alternator / power steering?) and if the failure of this belt can cause the cambelt to jump / break?

Thanks! Craig

I think this version of the Tiguan may still have unit injectors like my A4 2.0 TDI, if so I find all of this very hard to believe, as any fuel system plumbing is no where near the CAM or Alternator belts. In fact the CAM belt is very well shrouded any way against anything spraying on it.

Im not saying that diesel on the alternator belt is a good thing, but I dont think it would cause it to snap, and how on earth can a snapped alternator belt cause a problem with the cam belt.

I think this gartage must be similar to the one that was parodied by the Harry Enfield characters 'Lee & Lance.'

Sounds very similar to my problem 2008 Tiguan. Lovely car, but lousy faults. Mine had smoke pouring out underneath the chassis when I got to work last Thursday. Panic. Drove carefully to authorised dealer/garage. Diesel filter apparently blocked and diesel leaking onto some hot pipe - hence smoke. Four days later car just cut out. More panic. Towed to same dealer/garage at serious expense. Not looked at for 2 days, but today seemingly same diagnosis. Fanbelt broken and has probably got caught in the cambelt. Car is just out of guarantee, having cut out 3 times under guarantee due to faulty fuel gauge which took a long time to diagnose. I won't go into the seat belt warning which sometimes beeps for minutes even when the seatbelt is fastened. Lovely car, just wish I hadn't bought it.

I'm pretty sure this was the older PD engine as opposed to the CR vesions in use now. So that makes the garages comments even more ridiculous. There is no foreable way diesel could get onto the fan belt as far as I can see.

It is utter rubbish and I would say for the engine to cut out it is more probably and engine electrical problem elsewhere.. I would say get well away from these cowboys and get to a VW specialist or dealer before its too late.
