A friend phoned last night to say he had received a letter from the local council. Like myself he has rented a lockup from them for many years. They say they are auditing and need details of the vehicle kept therein and a copy of the V5. He, in fact, keeps a semi-dismantled BSA 650 in it, plus numerous parts for a classic Humber Hawk and a colection of old mowers. The BSA doesn't even have a V5. This seems like another example of council snooping or a job creation scheme

! Has anybody else had this? I imagine that I will get a letter from them soon. It does seem irrelevant as most lockups are used for storage these days being too narrow for modern cars.

Tell them to go mind their own fricking business! You pay your rent, what you do with the garage is none of their concern provided you aren't breaking the law or causing a nuisance. I would reply asking them to state in full what legal grounds they are using to require you to provide that information to them. None at all, I suspect.

It is their business - especially if parking is tight around the area!

The lease for the garage may well state that its for storing a vehicle, and if they have a long waiting list for garages, why not do an audit from time to time to see whether they're being used for the intended purpose.

I'd just tell them it my daily runner whatever that happens to be and as for the V5 - tell 'em to mind their own business.

I remember receiving a fine from the DVLA for not SORNing a motorbike (why should I?) they sent a form along with the fine 7 pages thick with info I "had to" supply, marital status, house ownership details, salary etc. In thick marker I wrote "none of your f***ing business" across the front of it and returned it with a cheque for the fine - I heard nothing about it - they cashed the cheque.

Why are people so keen to hand over information the government (both local and main) who have no right to it? We are supposed to be free citizens. Imagine if Hitler had a database of all the Jews...

Never supply more information than you strictly have to - it WILL be used against you one day.
